Triangles\, flying geese\, stripes\, wonky shapes. Not only will we be learning this exciting approach to improv sewing\, but we will also dive heavily into color and talk about Giuseppe’s favorite tool for choosing fabric: VALUE! Whether you’re an FPP’er who loves the look of improv but long for the structure of paper piecing\, or you’re an improv sewist looking for a new way to approach your work\, this workshop truly has something for everyone. Bring an adventurous spirit to what is sure to be an exciting workshop you won’t want to miss! \n\nRE DESCRIPTION: Join us for this workshop featuring Giucy Giuce’s pattern RE. Currently the pattern is only available through the workshop. Re is a modular pattern in which the sewist decides what size blades (from 3 choices) they would like to use and also the frequency in which the blades appear. Meaning you can choose to eliminate some blades entirely. Make the blades the same size\, make them all different\, leave spaces. This creates countless variations! Giucy Giuce will share his tips and tricks for best practices when foundation paper piecing and sewing curves. Don’t miss the chance to be the first to take this new workshop!\n \n\nRE SUPPLY LIST:  Note – Supplies listed are to make ONE Re block.\nPattern Cost – $10/student \n\n\n4 copies of Re blade templates (copies provided by me)\n1 copy of each background template (copies provided by me)\nBackground fabric\nLarge scraps or an assortment of F8s/FQs for the blades\nRotary Cutter\nSewing Machine\nThread (I recommend an 80 wt thread like Decobob by WonderFil\, I have my sets available for purchase)\nRulers (12″ add a quarter ruler suggested)\nCutting mat\nSeam ripper\nSeam roller (suggested)\nTransparent tape\nSet of assorted colored pens (at least 3 different colors)\nColored pencils\n\n\n\nBIO I grew up in Long Island\, NY. First generation Sicilian-American on my dad’s side and second on my mom’s\, my family lived on the bottom floor of my maternal grandparents’ house. My parents were restaurant owners and as such spent much of their time working\, so my sister and I were often upstairs with my grandparents.\nMy grandmother is a remarkably talented and prolific seamstress. She taught me to sew in the Sicilian fashion\, which is to say she would show me how to do something and I would have approximately 10 seconds to demonstrate that I had learned it perfectly before she’d abruptly pick me up and sew the seam herself. I never much cared for the finicky elements of garment making\, so sewing took a backseat for a while. It wasn’t until I was in college that I discovered quilting. I began with sewing improvisational  quilts before moving into modern traditional territory. I joined Instagram shortly thereafter and quickly found myself making long distance friends in the ever-growing quilting community via social media.\nAfter bouncing around the country for about a decade\, I decided to move back to New York to pursue  a career in textiles. Within a few months of being in NYC I was offered a marketing position at Andover Fabrics and was promoted to multimedia manager a year later. In 2018\, I refocused my energy to fabric  design and released my first collection Quantum. In 2021 I released my tenth collection called Nonna\, an homage to my beloved grandmother and her home where I learned to sew. My most recent release\, Sleuth\, is the third and final collection in a true crime series I have dubbed The Gnarls Hollow Trilogy.

SUMMARY:*FILLED* Workshop-Dancing with the Wall-Session#2 (2 days)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER AND PAY: Click HERE\nWorkshop name/teacher\, date\,and price needed for signup. \nFor availability and questions\, contact  programs@northernstarquilters.com \n\n\nBe sure your NSQG membership is up-to-date (click here to renew or join) before registering as a member.\nNon-members are welcome (based on availability) for an increased fee\, as listed in the event description.\nAll sign-ups are subject to availability; NO refunds unless the event is cancelled.\nSupply lists\, if not already on the website\, will be emailed to participants shortly before the workshop\nZoom link\, if applicable\, will be emailed to participants a few days before the workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Filled – Waitlist Only\nIRENE RODERICK\n \nDancing with the Wall:  Improv Irene-Style Quick-Step \nWEDNESDAY and THURSDAY\, May 8-9\,  2024\n9:00 am to 6:00 pm each day with an hour for lunch\nMembers $150\nLive\, in-person\, 2 days at the Millwood Firehouse on 100 Millwood Road in Millwood\, NY 10546 \nCome spend two days with Irene and learn how to let your sub-conscience and creativity drive you to make a unique expression of your individual aesthetic and process. Using only two contrasting colors\, you will learn how to construct the individual components used to make an improv Irene-style quilt. You will discover how fun it is to make many types of  stripes\, triangles\, squares and curves in new and original ways. Expect to leave with a piece in progress as well as all the techniques to pursue this approach to improv quilting. \nAbout two weeks before the workshop Irene will send copies of her handouts and links to two of her videos–one on components and one on skinny lines. \nPlease sign up promptly.  If there is enough interest and registration and this workshop closes out early\, a second class can be arranged with Irene. \n \nTo learn more about Irene Roderick\, visit her website:  Irene Roderick \n \nYou can purchase her book at your local quilt or book store\, or order on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. \nSupply list will be emailed to participants. \n\nAbout Irene\n\nMy artwork is currently grounded in the textile arts\, focused on quilt making and fabric dyeing.  I am trained as a painter and I have always been interested in pattern and color and how these elements can evoke emotional and political responses. A few years ago\, I encountered modern quilting and loved the idea of making a “utilitarian painting.” I learned to quilt and accidentally discovered improvisational quilting\, an intuitive\, spontaneous process I call “dancing with the wall.” The technique opened up a new-found creativity for me. This work is entirely intuitive and visceral.   \nI begin by placing a scrap of fabric in the center of my design wall and then grow the quilt one element at a time\, responding to each “step” until it feels balanced\, interesting and joyful. When I begin\, I do not know  what is going to happen but create through trial and error\, literally dancing between the wall\, the cutting mat\, the sewing machine and the iron. Through this act of making\, I have learned to embrace the joy of creative intuition\, spontaneous expression\, and a blind trust in process.
