SUMMARY:Workshop- Thread Painting 101
DESCRIPTION:SIGN-UP:  To check availability or with any questions\, email  programs@northernstarquilters.com \n\nBe sure your NSQG membership is up-to-date (click here to renew or join) before registering as a member.\nNon-members are welcome (based on availability) for an increased fee\, as listed in the event description.\nAll sign-ups are subject to availability; NO refunds unless the event is cancelled.\nSupply lists\, if not already on the website\, will be emailed shortly before the workshop\nZoom link\, if applicable\, will be emailed to participants a few days before the workshop.\n\nPay by credit card: click HERE.\nPay by check (payable to Northern Star Quilters’ Guild):\n– EMAIL  programs@northernstarquilters.com with your selection;\n– NOTE on your check the workshop you want;\n– MAIL your check to: Betty Moulton\, 404 Tamarack Lane\, Brewster\, NY  10509 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBETSY HABICH – Thread Painting 101 \nThursday\, 20 November 2025\n9:00 am to 3:30 pm\nLive\, in-person at the Millwood Fire House\n$55 \nKit Fee $30 (Betsy’s image) / $35 (your own image) – Kit Fee paid directly to Betsy during the workshop\nIntensive thread-painting gives you the freedom to make a very realistic\, tapestry-like image entirely with thread\, and the only skill you need is confident free-motion quilting! Starting with your own good-quality photo\, we will explore ways to create color combinations and textures to transform it into a realistic 8 1⁄2” x 11” thread painting. You will be amazed by what you can do! You will learn the basics of thread painting\, including balancing sewing machine tension\, straight-stitch and zig-zag thread painting\, and tips for avoiding distortion \nNote: If you choose to use your own photo\, you will be asked to send me your proposed photo two weeks ahead of time for approval\, editing\, and printing. I will bring the printed photo to class made into a quilt sandwich so students can maximize their in-class work time. \nKIT INFO \nStudents choosing to work with one of my kits will have a $30 fee. Students choosing to work with one of their own photos will have a kit fee of $35\, which will cover and include my review and editing of their photos\, printing their photo on prepared cotton\, making their photo into a fused  8 1/2” x 11” quilt sandwich\, providing a second prepared quilt sandwich for in-class exercises and two 8 1/2” x 11” color copies of their photo for in-class exercises.  Students will also receive a multi-page handout detailing the exercises. \nBETSY HABICH Supply List \n\nA sewing machine which is in good working order and is capable of free-motion stitching.  Students often asked whether they should bring their “good” machine – a high-end machine is not necessary (straight-stitch and zig-zag is all we need)\, BUT the machine must be reliable and able to stand up to being run at high speeds over an extended period.  I strongly recommend students have their machine serviced in the 6 months before the workshop\, as their success in the class will depend on their sewing machine working. Students should also bring their sewing machine manual and any tools that came with their machine plus any additional tools they regularly use to clean their machine.\nA free-motion embroidery foot.  The open “C” at the bottom of the foot lets you see exactly where your needle will land and makes thread painting much\, much\, much easier.  If that is not possible\, a clear quilting foot is ok.\nA package of size 14 topstitch machine needles\nFive to seven bobbins\, preferably loaded with a selection of the colors you expect to use in your thread painting\nParchment paper\nAlcohol wipes\nEach participant will need to study their approved photo carefully and bring thread in all the colors they can see. There are often quite a lot of colors! I use and recommend Aurifil 50 weight/2 ply cotton thread because I like the way it looks stitched out and because it is low lint (though not no-lint). For beginning thread painters\, it is also perfectly fine to use 50-weight Mettler\, Metrosene\, or Guttermann cotton or cotton-look thread.  I do not recommend using rayon thread because it is not strong enough to stand up to rapid stitching. (I do not personally like the look of shiny 50-weight machine embroidery thread\, but you are an experienced machine embroider and have a large stash of shiny 50-weight embroidery thread\, you are free to use that\, with the caveat that I may not be able to help you if the thread misbehaves.)

Then you see how to make a photorealistic thread painting: selecting the right photo\, printing it on fabric\, seeing all the colors in the piece\, selecting threads\, different stitches\, blending colors smoothly\, representing texture\, and paying attention to detail. The third part follows a landscape thread-painting from start to finish\, to show how a painting actually develops. Q&A and opportunity to look at the quilts follow. \n  \nBIO Betsy Habich’s quilts have been juried into national and regional  shows\, including International Quilt Association (IQA /Houston)\, American Quilters  Society (AQS/ Paducah)\, Machine Quilters Expo (MQX)\, and Quilters Gathering\, and  her work has been awarded at regional quilt shows including the Vermont Quilt Festival\,  The Gathering\, and the Machine Quilters Expo (MQX). In addition\, she has had several  one-woman shows at local shows\, shops\, and libraries. She is a self-confessed  fabricaholic and cat person\, though she has also been known to play with dogs. She lives  with her husband\, cats\, and fabric in Beverly Farms\, MA. \nClick here to learn about Betsy Habich Quilts \n\nBusiness meeting generally starts at 6pm\, arrive earlier for sign-in\, refreshments and socializing\, with any lecture generally at 7pm.\nGuests are always welcome\, there is a guest fee\, $10\, which can be credited toward membership – click HERE for more information. \nOur Hospitality team provides coffee and tea along with a few cookies at in-person meetings.\nPlease bring your own mug or water bottle.\nMember contributions of home-baked treats or other simple snacks are requested!

Work with color\, scale\, and value is an important feature in bringing the composition to balance. Bold\, graphic prints are a useful tool in piecing improv work\, as they offer more shapes that maintain the images brought forth\, so they are encouraged to be used in this class. It’s a great way to use one-of-a-kind prints. \nYou can see Pat’s supply list HERE.

Participants will use a rotary cutter to cut simple lines and shapes to create a small composition or more than one. Participants may choose to make a number of small blocks instead of a composition. \nVALERIE MASER-FLANAGAN Supply List \n\nSolid black and white fabric: 1 yard of each. We will use the black and white fabric to create our initial design(s).\nIt is your choice if you want to stick with black and white fabric or if you want to bring colored fabric. Select colors that you would like to work with but make sure you have at least one dark and one light fabric. You can limit your choice to two fabrics or bring as many as you want. I would recommend solid fabric.\nI yard of flannel or batting to tape on the wall as a design board.\nBlue painters tape (not masking tape) to tape the design wall fabric to the wall.\nRotary cutter: bring the largest size you have. This is a good time to put in a fresh new blade if you haven’t changed your blade in a while.\nCutting mat: I recommend a 24 x 36 inch size if you have one. But bring what you have.\nCell phone or IPAD to take pictures of your work in progress.\nPen\, pencil\, paper for notes\, sketches\nSewing machine\, thread\, scissors and whatever else you usually need for basic sewing.\nPins for piecing and to use on the design wall.\nOptional: larger ruler for squaring up the design.

SUMMARY:Our Next Show is on Hiatus - Stay Tuned
DESCRIPTION:Quilt Show Catalog – 2025Winners List – 2025Our next show is on hiatus – stay tuned for future possibilities\n\nWORLD OF QUILTS XLV\nOur show of  around 300 quilts displays the many facets of the art and craft of quilting:  traditional to modern to improvisational to fiber art and includes well-known speakers\, special exhibits\, demonstrations\, raffles\, quilts for sale\, and vendors selling fabric\, quilting related items\, and sewing machines. \nSpeaker2025 Invitational - Marge Tucker\n  – \n More about Marge...\nMarge Tucker is an international award-winning quilt artist and quilting instructor.  Learning how to sew clothes from her mother\, the first quilt she made was for friends expecting their first child over thirty years ago.   “At that time\, I didn’t know that quilting would become my passion and now my profession.  I feel so fortunate to be able to share and continue the tradition of quilting with my students.” \n“I started with traditional pieced quilts but am now focused on abstract improvisational design in my work. My work is about color and small compositions. Each block in a quilt is made as its own element\, independent of the other blocks. After all of the blocks are constructed\, my goal is to arrange the small compositions to play off each other and work together to create a larger whole. What keeps me engaged is watching how the project changes and transforms with the addition of each color and texture.  The resulting quilts are contemporary works\, set in this time and place\, which reference the rich tradition of quilt making. \n \nThis exhibit showcases a portion of my contemporary improvisational quilts\, from an earlier improv quilt (Urban Cabins) to some recent finishes (Solstice and Bright Boxed Diamonds) as well as quilts that were inspired by antique quilts in my collection. My process when creating quilts is to start with an idea and some colors and see where I am led.  I often do not have a definitive idea of what the finished quilt will be\, for me this allows  experimentation and the ability to add or subtract elements as I form the composition.  I quilt all of my quilts myself.  Once the top is completed I then quilt on a domestic machine (Bernina) with my walking foot or I use the BabyLock Sashiko machine for a hand quilted look.I started collecting quilts around 2006.  I have always loved going to antique shows and stores  and\, with quilting as a passion\, I started to look for quilts as I browsed.  When I started working improvisationally in my quilting I looked for older quilts made in an improvisational manner\, where the quilt maker wasn’t using a recognizable quilt block or else was taking creative license with a commonly known quilt block. As my collection grew\, I became so inspired by some of these antique and vintage quilts that I began to recreate and reimagine them.  Shown in this exhibit are an antique Crazy Quilt top that inspired Redux 117.  Other quilts in this exhibit that were inspired by an antique/vintage quilt or top are Bright Boxed Diamonds\, Solstice and Burst. When making my version of an older quilt\, my goal was not to exactly duplicate it but rather to capture its spirit\, essence\, or defining design element\, or else to reimagine it in a different colorway.   \nMarge teaches throughout the United States and also from her studio in Rockland\, MA.  She lives in Norwell\, MA and Phoenix\, AZ.You can read more on Marge’s website:  margetuckerquilts.com. \n\nLectures Demos\n\nSaturday – 1 pm – \nSaturday – 3 pm –\nSunday – 1 pm –\n\n'Take a Chance' \nBernette b08 Sewing Machine (donated by Pins&Needles) \n\n \nSewing Machine and Basket Raffles \nVendors\n Vendor List \nQuilts for Sale\n\nCreated by NSQG members\nFundraising Quilt\nSupport 2025’s fundraiser for Camp Herrlich.\nRequest tickets now! \nBook Sale\n\n\nQuilt and craft books (gently used) at bargain prices \n\n \nShow Pins\nA limited supply of 2025 lapel pins for sale\, based on our spectacular fundraising quilt \nChallenge Display\n\nUpcycled Ties and Scarves\nAQS Guild Challenge Winners\n\nSpecial Interest Groups \nQuilt displays on various themes by NSQG’s talented SIG members.\nFiber Art NorthEast and Connected by Threads\nCampus and Area Restaurants\n\nCampus Parking Map\nRead about our Show History\nSee some Past Show Pics

Using only two contrasting colors\, you will learn how to construct the individual components used to make an improv Irene-style quilt. You will discover how fun it is to make many types of  stripes\, triangles\, squares and curves in new and original ways. Expect to leave with a piece in progress as well as all the techniques to pursue this approach to improv quilting. \nAbout two weeks before the workshop Irene will send copies of her handouts and links to two of her videos–one on components and one on skinny lines. \nPlease sign up promptly.  If there is enough interest and registration and this workshop closes out early\, a second class can be arranged with Irene. \n \nTo learn more about Irene Roderick\, visit her website:  Irene Roderick \n \nYou can purchase her book at your local quilt or book store\, or order on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. \nSupply list will be emailed to participants. \n\nAbout Irene\n\nMy artwork is currently grounded in the textile arts\, focused on quilt making and fabric dyeing.  I am trained as a painter and I have always been interested in pattern and color and how these elements can evoke emotional and political responses. A few years ago\, I encountered modern quilting and loved the idea of making a “utilitarian painting.” I learned to quilt and accidentally discovered improvisational quilting\, an intuitive\, spontaneous process I call “dancing with the wall.” The technique opened up a new-found creativity for me. This work is entirely intuitive and visceral.   \nI begin by placing a scrap of fabric in the center of my design wall and then grow the quilt one element at a time\, responding to each “step” until it feels balanced\, interesting and joyful. When I begin\, I do not know  what is going to happen but create through trial and error\, literally dancing between the wall\, the cutting mat\, the sewing machine and the iron. Through this act of making\, I have learned to embrace the joy of creative intuition\, spontaneous expression\, and a blind trust in process.
