Triangles\, flying geese\, stripes\, wonky shapes. Not only will we be learning this exciting approach to improv sewing\, but we will also dive heavily into color and talk about Giuseppe’s favorite tool for choosing fabric: VALUE! Whether you’re an FPP’er who loves the look of improv but long for the structure of paper piecing\, or you’re an improv sewist looking for a new way to approach your work\, this workshop truly has something for everyone. Bring an adventurous spirit to what is sure to be an exciting workshop you won’t want to miss! \n\nRE DESCRIPTION: Join us for this workshop featuring Giucy Giuce’s pattern RE. Currently the pattern is only available through the workshop. Re is a modular pattern in which the sewist decides what size blades (from 3 choices) they would like to use and also the frequency in which the blades appear. Meaning you can choose to eliminate some blades entirely. Make the blades the same size\, make them all different\, leave spaces. This creates countless variations! Giucy Giuce will share his tips and tricks for best practices when foundation paper piecing and sewing curves. Don’t miss the chance to be the first to take this new workshop!\n \n\nRE SUPPLY LIST:  Note – Supplies listed are to make ONE Re block.\nPattern Cost – $10/student \n\n\n4 copies of Re blade templates (copies provided by me)\n1 copy of each background template (copies provided by me)\nBackground fabric\nLarge scraps or an assortment of F8s/FQs for the blades\nRotary Cutter\nSewing Machine\nThread (I recommend an 80 wt thread like Decobob by WonderFil\, I have my sets available for purchase)\nRulers (12″ add a quarter ruler suggested)\nCutting mat\nSeam ripper\nSeam roller (suggested)\nTransparent tape\nSet of assorted colored pens (at least 3 different colors)\nColored pencils\n\n\n\nBIO I grew up in Long Island\, NY. First generation Sicilian-American on my dad’s side and second on my mom’s\, my family lived on the bottom floor of my maternal grandparents’ house. My parents were restaurant owners and as such spent much of their time working\, so my sister and I were often upstairs with my grandparents.\nMy grandmother is a remarkably talented and prolific seamstress. She taught me to sew in the Sicilian fashion\, which is to say she would show me how to do something and I would have approximately 10 seconds to demonstrate that I had learned it perfectly before she’d abruptly pick me up and sew the seam herself. I never much cared for the finicky elements of garment making\, so sewing took a backseat for a while. It wasn’t until I was in college that I discovered quilting. I began with sewing improvisational  quilts before moving into modern traditional territory. I joined Instagram shortly thereafter and quickly found myself making long distance friends in the ever-growing quilting community via social media.\nAfter bouncing around the country for about a decade\, I decided to move back to New York to pursue  a career in textiles. Within a few months of being in NYC I was offered a marketing position at Andover Fabrics and was promoted to multimedia manager a year later. In 2018\, I refocused my energy to fabric  design and released my first collection Quantum. In 2021 I released my tenth collection called Nonna\, an homage to my beloved grandmother and her home where I learned to sew. My most recent release\, Sleuth\, is the third and final collection in a true crime series I have dubbed The Gnarls Hollow Trilogy.

SUMMARY:Challenge+Meeting+Lecture-Ellen Blalock
DESCRIPTION:Business meeting generally starts at 6pm\, arrive earlier for sign-in\, refreshments and socializing\, with any lecture generally at 7pm.  Guests are always welcome\, there is a guest fee\, $10\, which can be credited toward membership – click HERE for more information. \nOur Hospitality team provides coffee and tea along with a few cookies at in-person meetings.\nPlease bring your own mug or water bottle.\nMember contributions of home-baked treats or other simple snacks are requested! \n\nChallenge Quilts to be displayed and voted on!\n\n \n15 April 2026 \nELLEN BLALOCK \nArt\, Artists and Activism: Quilts \nThis lecture gives a brief history of artists that use the quilt medium to produce art quilts that address social\, political and current affairs in their community and the world. I discuss the story development of several quilts I produced from two or more quilt series that address violence\, racism\, identity\, trauma and mental illness. The narrative of these quilts show connections to my life as a journalist and documentarian. For quilt groups I cover my journey to adapt quilting techniques to my work. I pick several quilts and explain construction and problem solving with a theme. \nBIO I am an artist with a mission. I believe my job is to be a conduit to listen and tell the stories of people that need to be heard and represented; the ones whose lives and experiences have been marginalized. I am particularly interested in the African American experience in the United States. Through my art I have dealt with issues around African American teen fathers\, slavery\, female identity and power\, LGBTQ families\, “Deaf” children\, mental illness and trauma\, and the ancestors. My job is to listen\, to record\, to make available the voices and stories of what is missing. The Fathers’ Project\, Beyond Boundaries in Ghana\, The Quilt Project\, Know Me\, the WHOLE Me and CAGE have all grown out of  my need to help give voices to people and communities that need their stories told. I work in many media. The main ones are photography\, video\, drawing\, and fiber. Some of my projects have been collaborations with other artists for performance art and installation pieces. I have taught courses in art\, art history and photography at several colleges and universities. My signature studio course is The Visual Narrative. I have a BFA from Tyler College of Art\, Temple University and a MFA from Syracuse University. I am originally from Philadelphia\, PA and live in Syracuse\, NY. \nClick here to learn more about Ellen Blalock

I used 74 linear yards to make 70″x 76″ quilt top. Maybe start with 25 linear yards of fabric.\nI noticed that fabric with a bigger design shows better in this quilt. Also include some solid fabric.\nI tried to cut my strips with the grain of fabric not across from selvage to selvage to prevent fabric from stretching while sewing strips together.\nMeg Mooar - Kawandi Style Quilt\n \n\nKawandi are an ancestral craft practiced by the African diaspora in western India.  They are made from recycled saris and constructed from the outside in.  In this workshop we will be practicing a western style of sewing a Kawandi – a respectful interpretation of this traditional technique. \nSupply List:\nThis is a hand stitching project.\nGather scraps and colorful threads to reproduce your own\, unique interpretation of a Kawandi. \nJoAnne Hochstein - Wool Applique\n \n– \nThis will be our 3rd year exploring the many ways to work with Wool. Any appliqué pattern can be translated in to Wool Appliqué and even combined with traditional cotton piecing. \nIf you have a pattern in mind bring it and I’ll help you get started otherwise I will have samples for you to work on.\nPlease bring your hand sewing kit with a thimble (if that’s how you work) and both paper and fabric scissors.Jane Eyes - Improv 101\n \n\nPlaying Around with Orphan Blocks \nDo you have a collection of orphan blocks and other bits from a workshop or an abandoned project? Are you ready to slice them up and dive into the art of improvisational piecing?  We will be using those abandoned bits to explore various improv techniques including ruler free cutting\, and create a small piece\, a table runner\, wall quilt\, or panels for a tote bag. \nSupply List \n\n2 or 3 Orphan blocks that have a pleasing color theme and other “bits” that compliment that palette\n4-5 Fat quarters of fabrics that fit into your chosen palette. Be sure to bring a range of values – light to dark\nDesign wall – a square yard of flannel and blue painter’s tape\nSewing machine with ¼ inch foot\nNeutral thread – medium grey or khaki\nRotary cutter with a new blade\, cutting mat\, and one ruler\n\n*FILLED* Patricia Loquet - Potato Chip Quilt\n \nA note about the photo-I chose to use as the starting point a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2” square instead of two potato chips. \n\nCome for the Ranger Cookies but stay for Potato Chips! \nA potato chip in Quilters language means a 2 1/2”x 4 1/2” rectangle. Beginner and scrap friendly these quilts go together easily. And there are many variations for putting the blocks together. Most but not all variations use equal numbers of dark and light chips. As said this is a very scrap friendly quilt but you can always make it a “controlled” scrappy by your choice of fabrics and placement. \nSUPPLY LIST: \nA 12” block uses 15 “potato chips”; an 8” block uses 8 “potato chips\, your choice. Bring enough chips for however big you want your quilt.  Half should be light and the other half dark or dark medium.  I encourage you to make up baggies of 10 light/10 dark to trade with others to really make it scrappy. \n\nBasics – Sewing machine\, thread\, needles\, scissors\, pins\nCutting board and rotary cutter and ruler (if you haven’t cut all your pieces)\nPersonal iron & mat  (I will also bring an iron and ironing board\n\n*FILLED* Karen Eckmeier - Accidental Landscape™: Mountain Views \n \n©2009-2026 Karen Eckmeier        karen@quilted-lizard.com    www.kareneckmeier.com \nFabric\n\nSky: ¼ yard “dramatic” fabric with clouds\, or sun\, or a handpainted fabric. The sky fabric sets the mood for you entire scene\, so be sure you love it!\nRolling Hills: ¼ yard 5-7 greens gradated from light to dark (look for small scale prints – not necessarily “landscape” fabrics. For example: irregular stripes\, random dots\, mottled\, etc. Distant Mountains: scraps or 1/8 yard each of white\, gray\, medium purple\, or gray blue\nWildflowers (optional): ¼ yard small scale floral that looks like growing flowers\nLake/River: blues OR use a section of the sky fabric (the reflection of the sky is usually visible in the water)\nOuter Border: ¼ yard your choice – dark neutrals\, such as black\, brown and gray work nicely as borders that act as picture frames or a window frame to surround the scene.\n\n\nHere’s another surprisingly simple quilted scene using Karen’s layered topstitching technique. Gentle rolling hills of green fabric strips combine with distant peaks to create peaceful vistas. Include a lake or a field of wildflowers. The variations are endless! You will also learn how to embellish the landscape with beads\, yarn and Angelina fibers to give it sparkle.\nFinished size: approx. 9” x 12” without borders (size varies)\nTo view color photos of this workshop go to pages 8-13 and 50-51 in the Accidental Landscapes book. \nSupplies\n\nSewing Machine (Featherweights are fine)\nRotary cutter\, ruler\, and mat\nIron and ironing pad (mini iron will work)\nThreads for topstitching – select threads to match fabrics or use variegated threads\nNeutral thread for bobbin\nFabric scissors\nPins (I recommend the long flower head pins)\nFabric glue (for adding optional details)\nRuler for rotary cutting borders\nQuilter’s Square for squaring piece (only if you already own one)\nBook: Accidental Landscapes by Karen Eckmeier $21.95 (highly recommended but not required)\n\nMost students get to the quilting stage in both the 3 hour and 6 hour workshops\,  this is what you will need: \n\nThreads for quilting (machine or hand)\nNeedles for machine quilting or hand quilting\n100% cotton batting (approx. 18” x 22”) + half yard fabric for backing\n“Walking Foot” and/or Darning Foot for Machine quilting\nPins for Basting (for tiny quilts like these\, pins are great)

SUMMARY:Meeting+Lecture (Zoom)-Christine Barnes
DESCRIPTION:This is a Zoom event.\nThe zoom link will be emailed to registered participants a few days before.\n\n \n21 January 2026  ZOOM \nChristine Barnes \nColor! Color! Color! \nLuster! Luminosity! Transparency! \n1) Being “good with color” is more about practice than talent! This program begins with a look at the three color characteristics common to all quilts and garments: value\, temperature\, and intensity. These terms sound academic\, yet they\, as much as color itself\, are the key to making great quilts. Learn how to use the color wheel to create fresh\, unexpected color combinations. See how color affects texture and pattern. Images of quilts from nationally known quilters are followed by my quilts and a digital mini fashion show of wearables. \n2) Put simply\, “magic fabrics” give a quilt light and vitality. Some suggest light coming from below the surface (luminosity) or bouncing across the surface (luster). Others imply that see-through colors overlap to create new color mixtures (transparency). They typically display variations in value—light areas among darker areas\, or light-to-dark gradations—and they often contain warm colors. A digital trunk show of fabrics\, quilts\, and wearables brings the concepts to life. \nBIO My quilting life began when I was eight or nine\, with a doll quilt made on my crank Singer sewing machine. I asked my grandmother what was inside a quilt\, and she said “cotton.” I stuffed my little quilt with cotton balls—and wondered why it was lumpy. \nFast forward through teenage years happily spent sewing clothes. Degrees in Design and Journalism segued into a full-time job for Sunset Publishing. In 1980 I wrote Quilting\, Patchwork & Appliqué\, a best seller\, thanks to the input from renowned quilter Roberta Horton. I went on to write books on soft furnishings\, decorating\, and remodeling. I loved my job. \nLater\, as a free-lance writer\, I was assigned to write a chapter on color for another Sunset book. Through exercises and observation\, my uncle\, an artist in Mendocino\, taught me how color works—and ignited a lifelong love of color. \nThat chapter laid the foundation for two books on color theory for quilters\, plus articles for quilt magazines and decades of teaching. My main takeaway? There are classic color concepts—and they work. Whether it’s choosing fabrics for a new quilt\, fixing one that’s not working\, or attempting an effect like transparency\, it all boils down to the basics. What may look like magic is grounded in classic color theory. \nRetired from traveling to teach\, I do lectures and classes via Zoom. I feel so fortunate to live a life that connects me to quilts and quilt makers worldwide. And now\, my best creative time is spent in my light-filled sewing room\, where I am always happy. \nClick here to learn more about Christine Barnes \nBusiness meeting generally starts at 6pm\, arrive earlier for sign-in\, refreshments and socializing\, with any lecture generally at 7pm.\nGuests are always welcome\, there is a guest fee\, $10\, which can be credited toward membership – click HERE for more information.

Meir Moses\, who was my mentor after school hours taught model sketching\, etching\, and woodcutting in our community center. In 1986 I was introduced to quilting. That was the beginning of my love for textiles and  creating original work in fiber\, fabric\, and thread. I enjoy working with a variety of fibers: Commercial\, hand painted or printed cottons\, silk\, chiffon\, etc. Oil paint lettering\,” thread paint” and hand embroidery are added for texture. My photographs taken on daily walks are the base of many quilts. I am inspired by nature\, Japanese motifs\, and my own family history. I am a member of the Northern Star Quilt Guild\, Studio Art Quilt Associates\, Fiber Art Creations\, the Ossining Arts Council\, the Israel Quilters Association\, Surface Design Association. I was lucky to have my quilts get accepted and earn local and international recognition and awards. I exhibited abroad in the UK\, France\, the Netherlands\, Canada\, Taiwan\, and Israel. In the United States\, my work has been featured in exhibitions in Houston\, TX; New Hope\, PA; Des Moines\, IA; the Gerald Ford Museum in Grand Rapids\, MI; and in the Tri-state Region. Today\, I enjoy retirement from teaching\, creating art. I live with my family in Ossining\, NY. \nClick here to learn about Tamar Drucker

SUMMARY:Our Next Show is on Hiatus - Stay Tuned
DESCRIPTION:Quilt Show Catalog – 2025Winners List – 2025Our next show is on hiatus – stay tuned for future possibilities\n\nWORLD OF QUILTS\nOur show of  around 300 quilts displays the many facets of the art and craft of quilting:  traditional to modern to improvisational to fiber art and includes well-known speakers\, special exhibits\, demonstrations\, raffles\, quilts for sale\, and vendors selling fabric\, quilting related items\, and sewing machines. \nSpeaker2025 Invitational - Marge Tucker\n  – \n More about Marge...\nMarge Tucker is an international award-winning quilt artist and quilting instructor.  Learning how to sew clothes from her mother\, the first quilt she made was for friends expecting their first child over thirty years ago.   “At that time\, I didn’t know that quilting would become my passion and now my profession.  I feel so fortunate to be able to share and continue the tradition of quilting with my students.” \n“I started with traditional pieced quilts but am now focused on abstract improvisational design in my work. My work is about color and small compositions. Each block in a quilt is made as its own element\, independent of the other blocks. After all of the blocks are constructed\, my goal is to arrange the small compositions to play off each other and work together to create a larger whole. What keeps me engaged is watching how the project changes and transforms with the addition of each color and texture.  The resulting quilts are contemporary works\, set in this time and place\, which reference the rich tradition of quilt making. \n \nThis exhibit showcases a portion of my contemporary improvisational quilts\, from an earlier improv quilt (Urban Cabins) to some recent finishes (Solstice and Bright Boxed Diamonds) as well as quilts that were inspired by antique quilts in my collection. My process when creating quilts is to start with an idea and some colors and see where I am led.  I often do not have a definitive idea of what the finished quilt will be\, for me this allows  experimentation and the ability to add or subtract elements as I form the composition.  I quilt all of my quilts myself.  Once the top is completed I then quilt on a domestic machine (Bernina) with my walking foot or I use the BabyLock Sashiko machine for a hand quilted look.I started collecting quilts around 2006.  I have always loved going to antique shows and stores  and\, with quilting as a passion\, I started to look for quilts as I browsed.  When I started working improvisationally in my quilting I looked for older quilts made in an improvisational manner\, where the quilt maker wasn’t using a recognizable quilt block or else was taking creative license with a commonly known quilt block. As my collection grew\, I became so inspired by some of these antique and vintage quilts that I began to recreate and reimagine them.  Shown in this exhibit are an antique Crazy Quilt top that inspired Redux 117.  Other quilts in this exhibit that were inspired by an antique/vintage quilt or top are Bright Boxed Diamonds\, Solstice and Burst. When making my version of an older quilt\, my goal was not to exactly duplicate it but rather to capture its spirit\, essence\, or defining design element\, or else to reimagine it in a different colorway.   \nMarge teaches throughout the United States and also from her studio in Rockland\, MA.  She lives in Norwell\, MA and Phoenix\, AZ.You can read more on Marge’s website:  margetuckerquilts.com. \n\nLectures Demos\n\nSaturday – 1 pm – \nSaturday – 3 pm –\nSunday – 1 pm –\n\n'Take a Chance' \nBernette b08 Sewing Machine (donated by Pins&Needles) \n\n \nSewing Machine and Basket Raffles \nVendors\n Vendor List \nQuilts for Sale\n\nCreated by NSQG members\nFundraising Quilt\nSupport 2025’s fundraiser for Camp Herrlich.\nRequest tickets now! \nBook Sale\n\n\nQuilt and craft books (gently used) at bargain prices \n\n \nShow Pins\nA limited supply of 2025 lapel pins for sale\, based on our spectacular fundraising quilt \nChallenge Display\n\nUpcycled Ties and Scarves\nAQS Guild Challenge Winners\n\nSpecial Interest Groups \nQuilt displays on various themes by NSQG’s talented SIG members.\nFiber Art NorthEast and Connected by Threads\nCampus and Area Restaurants\n\nCampus Parking Map\nRead about our Show History\nSee some Past Show Pics

Using only two contrasting colors\, you will learn how to construct the individual components used to make an improv Irene-style quilt. You will discover how fun it is to make many types of  stripes\, triangles\, squares and curves in new and original ways. Expect to leave with a piece in progress as well as all the techniques to pursue this approach to improv quilting. \nAbout two weeks before the workshop Irene will send copies of her handouts and links to two of her videos–one on components and one on skinny lines. \nPlease sign up promptly.  If there is enough interest and registration and this workshop closes out early\, a second class can be arranged with Irene. \n \nTo learn more about Irene Roderick\, visit her website:  Irene Roderick \n \nYou can purchase her book at your local quilt or book store\, or order on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. \nSupply list will be emailed to participants. \n\nAbout Irene\n\nMy artwork is currently grounded in the textile arts\, focused on quilt making and fabric dyeing.  I am trained as a painter and I have always been interested in pattern and color and how these elements can evoke emotional and political responses. A few years ago\, I encountered modern quilting and loved the idea of making a “utilitarian painting.” I learned to quilt and accidentally discovered improvisational quilting\, an intuitive\, spontaneous process I call “dancing with the wall.” The technique opened up a new-found creativity for me. This work is entirely intuitive and visceral.   \nI begin by placing a scrap of fabric in the center of my design wall and then grow the quilt one element at a time\, responding to each “step” until it feels balanced\, interesting and joyful. When I begin\, I do not know  what is going to happen but create through trial and error\, literally dancing between the wall\, the cutting mat\, the sewing machine and the iron. Through this act of making\, I have learned to embrace the joy of creative intuition\, spontaneous expression\, and a blind trust in process.
