SUMMARY:Our Next Show is on Hiatus - Stay Tuned
DESCRIPTION:Quilt Show Catalog – 2025Winners List – 2025Our next show is on hiatus – stay tuned for future possibilities\n\nWORLD OF QUILTS\nOur show of  around 300 quilts displays the many facets of the art and craft of quilting:  traditional to modern to improvisational to fiber art and includes well-known speakers\, special exhibits\, demonstrations\, raffles\, quilts for sale\, and vendors selling fabric\, quilting related items\, and sewing machines. \nSpeaker2025 Invitational - Marge Tucker\n  – \n More about Marge...\nMarge Tucker is an international award-winning quilt artist and quilting instructor.  Learning how to sew clothes from her mother\, the first quilt she made was for friends expecting their first child over thirty years ago.   “At that time\, I didn’t know that quilting would become my passion and now my profession.  I feel so fortunate to be able to share and continue the tradition of quilting with my students.” \n“I started with traditional pieced quilts but am now focused on abstract improvisational design in my work. My work is about color and small compositions. Each block in a quilt is made as its own element\, independent of the other blocks. After all of the blocks are constructed\, my goal is to arrange the small compositions to play off each other and work together to create a larger whole. What keeps me engaged is watching how the project changes and transforms with the addition of each color and texture.  The resulting quilts are contemporary works\, set in this time and place\, which reference the rich tradition of quilt making. \n \nThis exhibit showcases a portion of my contemporary improvisational quilts\, from an earlier improv quilt (Urban Cabins) to some recent finishes (Solstice and Bright Boxed Diamonds) as well as quilts that were inspired by antique quilts in my collection. My process when creating quilts is to start with an idea and some colors and see where I am led.  I often do not have a definitive idea of what the finished quilt will be\, for me this allows  experimentation and the ability to add or subtract elements as I form the composition.  I quilt all of my quilts myself.  Once the top is completed I then quilt on a domestic machine (Bernina) with my walking foot or I use the BabyLock Sashiko machine for a hand quilted look.I started collecting quilts around 2006.  I have always loved going to antique shows and stores  and\, with quilting as a passion\, I started to look for quilts as I browsed.  When I started working improvisationally in my quilting I looked for older quilts made in an improvisational manner\, where the quilt maker wasn’t using a recognizable quilt block or else was taking creative license with a commonly known quilt block. As my collection grew\, I became so inspired by some of these antique and vintage quilts that I began to recreate and reimagine them.  Shown in this exhibit are an antique Crazy Quilt top that inspired Redux 117.  Other quilts in this exhibit that were inspired by an antique/vintage quilt or top are Bright Boxed Diamonds\, Solstice and Burst. When making my version of an older quilt\, my goal was not to exactly duplicate it but rather to capture its spirit\, essence\, or defining design element\, or else to reimagine it in a different colorway.   \nMarge teaches throughout the United States and also from her studio in Rockland\, MA.  She lives in Norwell\, MA and Phoenix\, AZ.You can read more on Marge’s website:  margetuckerquilts.com. \n\nLectures Demos\n\nSaturday – 1 pm – \nSaturday – 3 pm –\nSunday – 1 pm –\n\n'Take a Chance' \nBernette b08 Sewing Machine (donated by Pins&Needles) \n\n \nSewing Machine and Basket Raffles \nVendors\n Vendor List \nQuilts for Sale\n\nCreated by NSQG members\nFundraising Quilt\nSupport 2025’s fundraiser for Camp Herrlich.\nRequest tickets now! \nBook Sale\n\n\nQuilt and craft books (gently used) at bargain prices \n\n \nShow Pins\nA limited supply of 2025 lapel pins for sale\, based on our spectacular fundraising quilt \nChallenge Display\n\nUpcycled Ties and Scarves\nAQS Guild Challenge Winners\n\nSpecial Interest Groups \nQuilt displays on various themes by NSQG’s talented SIG members.\nFiber Art NorthEast and Connected by Threads\nCampus and Area Restaurants\n\nCampus Parking Map\nRead about our Show History\nSee some Past Show Pics

SUMMARY:** SIGNUPS CLOSED ** Super Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Closed – No More Signups Accepted \nSuper Saturday – January 31\, 2026  \n$30 (Coffee and deli lunch included\, $15 guest surcharge)\nA wonderful opportunity to sit and sew and learn and mingle with fellow members in a smaller sociable setting.\n Any class specific questions\, contact the teacher.\nJust in case\, snow date February 7th.\n\nAny general questions or guest attendee options\, contact supersaturday@northernstarquilters.com\nSignup online and pay by credit card – click HERE\n– OR –\nSignup and pay by check (payable to Northern Star Quilters Guild) at guild meetings\n– OR –\nEmail supersaturday@northernstarquilters.com with your class request and to get check payment instructions\n\n\n\n\n2026 Classes\nSit N Sew\nArea available for those who want to setup and work on their own project. \nBarbara Glab - Scrappy Log Cabin\n \nSupply List:\n\n\nSewing machine with thread\nCutting mat & rotary cutter\nRuler 24×6 or 24×3\nLeft over fabric strips sewn into a ‘reel’  (see class description)\n\n\n\n\nIf you have leftover  “Jelly Roll” strips\, use them and cut more 2.5″ wide strips at random lengths from your scraps.\nOr you can cut scraps into 1.5″ or 2″ wide strips.\nWhatever size you choose\, sew those strips together at home\, creating a ‘reel’ that we will be using.\n\nI made my quilt top using 2″ wide strips. I used 74 linear yards to make 70″x 76″ quilt top. Maybe start with 25 linear yards of fabric.\nI noticed that fabric with a bigger design shows better in this quilt. Also include some solid fabric.\nI tried to cut my strips with the grain of fabric not across from selvage to selvage to prevent fabric from stretching while sewing strips together.\nMeg Mooar - Kawandi Style Quilt\n \n\nKawandi are an ancestral craft practiced by the African diaspora in western India.  They are made from recycled saris and constructed from the outside in.  In this workshop we will be practicing a western style of sewing a Kawandi – a respectful interpretation of this traditional technique. \nSupply List:\nThis is a hand stitching project.\nGather scraps and colorful threads to reproduce your own\, unique interpretation of a Kawandi. \nJoAnne Hochstein - Wool Applique\n \n– \nThis will be our 3rd year exploring the many ways to work with Wool. Any appliqué pattern can be translated in to Wool Appliqué and even combined with traditional cotton piecing. \nIf you have a pattern in mind bring it and I’ll help you get started otherwise I will have samples for you to work on.\nPlease bring your hand sewing kit with a thimble (if that’s how you work) and both paper and fabric scissors.Jane Eyes - Improv 101\n \n\nPlaying Around with Orphan Blocks \nDo you have a collection of orphan blocks and other bits from a workshop or an abandoned project? Are you ready to slice them up and dive into the art of improvisational piecing?  We will be using those abandoned bits to explore various improv techniques including ruler free cutting\, and create a small piece\, a table runner\, wall quilt\, or panels for a tote bag. \nSupply List \n\n2 or 3 Orphan blocks that have a pleasing color theme and other “bits” that compliment that palette\n4-5 Fat quarters of fabrics that fit into your chosen palette. Be sure to bring a range of values – light to dark\nDesign wall – a square yard of flannel and blue painter’s tape\nSewing machine with ¼ inch foot\nNeutral thread – medium grey or khaki\nRotary cutter with a new blade\, cutting mat\, and one ruler\n\n*FILLED* Patricia Loquet - Potato Chip Quilt\n \nA note about the photo-I chose to use as the starting point a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2” square instead of two potato chips. \n\nCome for the Ranger Cookies but stay for Potato Chips! \nA potato chip in Quilters language means a 2 1/2”x 4 1/2” rectangle. Beginner and scrap friendly these quilts go together easily. And there are many variations for putting the blocks together. Most but not all variations use equal numbers of dark and light chips. As said this is a very scrap friendly quilt but you can always make it a “controlled” scrappy by your choice of fabrics and placement. \nSUPPLY LIST: \nA 12” block uses 15 “potato chips”; an 8” block uses 8 “potato chips\, your choice. Bring enough chips for however big you want your quilt.  Half should be light and the other half dark or dark medium.  I encourage you to make up baggies of 10 light/10 dark to trade with others to really make it scrappy. \n\nBasics – Sewing machine\, thread\, needles\, scissors\, pins\nCutting board and rotary cutter and ruler (if you haven’t cut all your pieces)\nPersonal iron & mat  (I will also bring an iron and ironing board\n\n*FILLED* Karen Eckmeier - Accidental Landscape™: Mountain Views \n \n©2009-2026 Karen Eckmeier        karen@quilted-lizard.com    www.kareneckmeier.com \nFabric\n\nSky: ¼ yard “dramatic” fabric with clouds\, or sun\, or a handpainted fabric. The sky fabric sets the mood for you entire scene\, so be sure you love it!\nRolling Hills: ¼ yard 5-7 greens gradated from light to dark (look for small scale prints – not necessarily “landscape” fabrics. For example: irregular stripes\, random dots\, mottled\, etc. Distant Mountains: scraps or 1/8 yard each of white\, gray\, medium purple\, or gray blue\nWildflowers (optional): ¼ yard small scale floral that looks like growing flowers\nLake/River: blues OR use a section of the sky fabric (the reflection of the sky is usually visible in the water)\nOuter Border: ¼ yard your choice – dark neutrals\, such as black\, brown and gray work nicely as borders that act as picture frames or a window frame to surround the scene.\n\n\nHere’s another surprisingly simple quilted scene using Karen’s layered topstitching technique. Gentle rolling hills of green fabric strips combine with distant peaks to create peaceful vistas. Include a lake or a field of wildflowers. The variations are endless! You will also learn how to embellish the landscape with beads\, yarn and Angelina fibers to give it sparkle.\nFinished size: approx. 9” x 12” without borders (size varies)\nTo view color photos of this workshop go to pages 8-13 and 50-51 in the Accidental Landscapes book. \nSupplies\n\nSewing Machine (Featherweights are fine)\nRotary cutter\, ruler\, and mat\nIron and ironing pad (mini iron will work)\nThreads for topstitching – select threads to match fabrics or use variegated threads\nNeutral thread for bobbin\nFabric scissors\nPins (I recommend the long flower head pins)\nFabric glue (for adding optional details)\nRuler for rotary cutting borders\nQuilter’s Square for squaring piece (only if you already own one)\nBook: Accidental Landscapes by Karen Eckmeier $21.95 (highly recommended but not required)\n\nMost students get to the quilting stage in both the 3 hour and 6 hour workshops\,  this is what you will need: \n\nThreads for quilting (machine or hand)\nNeedles for machine quilting or hand quilting\n100% cotton batting (approx. 18” x 22”) + half yard fabric for backing\n“Walking Foot” and/or Darning Foot for Machine quilting\nPins for Basting (for tiny quilts like these\, pins are great)

Need I say more?! Join Giucy Giuce as he demonstrates his improv sewing to his foundation paper pieced  approach in this BRAND NEW workshop\, Controlled Chaos: An FPPers Approach to improv! \nWe’ll draw improvisational elements at random from a bag. You will then learn to draft your own improv-inspired FPP designs based on the mystery element. The motifs will be the same but everyone’s pieces will be uniquely their own! This workshop will be a lively one! We’ll set a timer to work on each element so we can pull enough designs to make a unique project. We’ll cover all sorts of looks and styles. Triangles\, flying geese\, stripes\, wonky shapes. \nIn this workshop we will be making a medallion quilt designed especially for Quilting Mayhem. Not only will we be learning this exciting approach to improv sewing\, we will also dive heavily into color and talk about Giuseppe’s favorite tool for choosing fabric: VALUE! Whether you’re an FPPer who loves the look of improv but longs for the structure of paper piecing or you’re an improv sewist looking for a new way to approach your work\, this workshop truly has something for everyone. First generation Sicilian-American on my dad’s side and second on my mom’s\, my family lived on the bottom floor of my maternal grandparents’ house. My parents were restaurant owners and as such spent much of their time working\, so my sister and I were often upstairs with my grandparents.\nMy grandmother is a remarkably talented and prolific seamstress. She taught me to sew in the Sicilian fashion\, which is to say she would show me how to do something and I would have approximately 10 seconds to demonstrate that I had learned it perfectly before she’d abruptly pick me up and sew the seam herself. I never much cared for the finicky elements of garment making\, so sewing took a backseat for a while. It wasn’t until I was in college that I discovered quilting. I began with sewing improvisational  quilts before moving into modern traditional territory. I joined Instagram shortly thereafter and quickly found myself making long distance friends in the ever-growing quilting community via social media.\nAfter bouncing around the country for about a decade\, I decided to move back to New York to pursue  a career in textiles. Within a few months of being in NYC I was offered a marketing position at Andover Fabrics and was promoted to multimedia manager a year later. In 2018\, I refocused my energy to fabric  design and released my first collection Quantum. In 2021 I released my tenth collection called Nonna\, an homage to my beloved grandmother and her home where I learned to sew. My most recent release\, Sleuth\, is the third and final collection in a true crime series I have dubbed The Gnarls Hollow Trilogy.\nClick here to learn more about Giucy Giuce \n\n

Marge made her first quilt over twenty-five years ago for friends expecting their first child. At that time\, Marge didn’t know that quilting would become her passion and profession. \nMarge has received numerous awards for her quilts\, including “Best Machine Quilting” at QuiltCon 2019 and “Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award – Modern” at the 2019 Pacific International Quilt Festival. SUMMARY:Workshop - Walking Foot Quilting
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER AND PAY: Click HERE\nWorkshop name/teacher\, date\,and price needed for signup. \nFor availability and questions\, contact  programs@northernstarquilters.com \n\n\nBe sure your NSQG membership is up-to-date (click here to renew or join) before registering as a member.\nNon-members are welcome (based on availability) for an increased fee\, as listed in the event description.\nAll sign-ups are subject to availability; NO refunds unless the event is cancelled.\nSupply lists\, if not already on the website\, will be emailed to participants shortly before the workshop\nZoom link\, if applicable\, will be emailed to participants a few days before the workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarge Tucker – Workshop 1 Walking Foot Quilting \nThursday\, 9/17/26\n9:00am to 4:00pm\nMillwood Fire House\nCost $90 \nYou can do so much innovative quilting JUST with your walking foot! I will show you my method of quilting with your walking foot that involves little or no marking but still results in spectacular quilting. \nI start with the basics\, such as batting choices\, thread\, needles and how to secure the quilting stitches. Then\, we start quilting with straight lines and move to curved quilting lines and spirals on your practice quilt sandwiches. For both the straight line and curved quilting\, I will show you many designs and variations you can use to great effect. I will also have some of my quilts as examples\, including “Burst” which received the award Best Machine Quilting (Frameless) at QuiltCon 2019. This class will change the way you think about your walking foot! \n\nSUPPLY LIST:\nIF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE E-MAIL ME @ margetuckerquilts@gmail.com \nFabric requirements: \n\nThree to four quilt sandwiches (fabric-batting-fabric) that measure 18” x 20”/22”.\nThe fabric should be a light solid or solid-looking. This is so you can make notes and clearly see the quilting lines.\nTo make the quilt sandwiches you could use six to eight fat quarters to make the quilt sandwiches or two yards of fabric cut into 1/2 yard cuts then cut on the fold.\nCut three to four pieces of batting the same size as the fabric (18” x 20”/22”).  A cotton\, cotton/poly blend or thin polyester batting work well.\n\nTools required: \n\nThread – have a thread (or threads) that will show up on your fabric. If you like\, use several types of thread\, such as a variegated thread or a thicker thread (30 to 40 weight thread) or different colors. Cotton or polyester thread is fine.\nQuilting needles for your sewing machine (size 11 or 14)\nQuilting gloves like Machingers or Grabaroos\nSewing machine in good working order with its power cord\, foot pedal AND manual. If you have a slide-on table for your machine that gives you extra room to the left of the needle have that attached as well.\nWalking foot for your sewing machine (Note: this is not a foot that comes with most sewing machines. If you are not sure if you have one or need to get one\, check with a dealer that sells your brand of sewing machine. Some sewing machines have a built-in walking foot (or duel feed system) like some Pfaff or Janome models and some new Bernina models. If your machine does have this function there is no additional foot needed).\nBasic sewing supplies – pins\, seam ripper\, scissors\, etc.\nA fine-tip black Sharpie or Pigma pen to write on the quilt sandwich\nA Hera marker\, Clover Fine White Marking Pen or a Frixon pen to mark the quilt sandwiches\n6” x 12” acrylic ruler OR a 6” x 24” acrylic ruler OR a 8” x 24” acrylic ruler\n\n**Prep work before class:** \n\nPlace a few safety pins in the quilt sandwiches (1 in each corner is good) or spray baste.\nHave your walking foot on the machine before class.  If your machine has the duel feed\, as addressed above\, you are set.\nSew a line to see how everything is working.

In the 6-hour class\, students will complete several blocks and know the options of how to combine blocks together. This is an incredibly versatile and innovative technique with many exciting variations to explore. \nSupply List \nSupply List for Modern Dresden Plate Blocks Fabric: • Background fabric (I used white but it can be any color) – 3 ½ yards • Fabric for the colored parts of the wedges : o 1/3 yard of three different fabrics o 1/8 yard (5 ½” inches wide x WOF) of six different fabrics o OR ¾ yard of one fabric **Precut BEFORE class**: From background fabric cut: • One 7 1/2” x width of fabric (WOF) strip • One 6 1/2” x width of fabric (WOF) strip • One 5 1/5” x width of fabric (WOF) strip From wedge fabric cut: • One 5 1/2” x width of fabric (WOF) strip • One 4 1/2” x width of fabric (WOF) strip • One 3 1/2” x width of fabric (WOF) strip *This could from one fabric OR three different fabrics Other Supplies: o Sewing machine and accessories (power cord\, foot pedal\, extension table [if you have one] AND manual) o Rotary cutter with a new blade o Cutting mat (18”x 24’’) o A clear acrylic square ruler (12 ½” square) used to square blocks o Basic sewing kit (scissors\, seam ripper\, straight pins) o Best Press or Magic spray starch o Thread in a neutral cotton o Olfa 6”x 24” ruler to cut the fabric and the wedges. If you have this ruler\, that is great! IF NOT\, I will have the ruler for purchase in class. **It MUST be this brand and length.* Thoughts/Tips in Selecting Fabric for Modern Dresden Plate If it helps in choosing your fabrics\, we will be making a variety of strip sets with a background fabric (in “Burst” this is the white fabric) and your other fabrics (this fabric will be the colored part of the wedge). Some strip sets will have a wide strip of background with a narrower strip of the wedge fabric. Other strip sets will have the reverse. This gives the varied length of the wedges in the blocks. I like to work with solid-colored cotton fabrics\, but really any cotton fabric that “reads” solid or has a slight print would work as well. Large scale prints don’t always highlight this technique but narrow striped fabrics or graphic printed fabrics look quite interesting mixed with the solid fabrics. **Please don’t hesitate to email me at margetuckerquilts@gmail.com if you have any questions on the supply list.**

After studying fashion design and spending a short time in the industry\, I took a detour and worked as a bookkeeper for 15 years. Later\, I married\, moved to the suburbs\, and raised two children as a stay-at-home mom. Eventually\, I found my way back to sewing and discovered art quilting. Before long that creative spark grew into a passion which led to teaching. Since then\, I’ve won about 50 awards\, including a Judge’s Choice\, a sewing machine\, and cash prizes. My work has been published twice\, and in November 2025\, I had a one-woman show at the prestigious Dwight Englewood School. Today\, I work and teach at The Quilt Tree in Nyack\, New York\, one of the few remaining quilt shops in the region.

We will move on to the fundamentals of designing or choosing fabrics for your project\, the fun part.  We will look at our quilt composition and my rules for choosing fabrics which includes texture\, scale\, balance and how to mix print types and using solids.\n\nI am a wife\, mother\, grandmother\, mother-in-law\, aunt\, sister-in-law\, friend\, teacher\, creator and designer. I love people and helping them develop their skills and personal style. Especially with my quilt teaching I have had the privilege of watching people find their creative voice as well as fostering friendships that quilting naturally inspires. My personal mission is to share my love of quilting and creating in a straightforward and relaxed atmosphere. When teaching\, my goal is to educate and encourage those interested in quilting as clearly and simply as possible. I find both venues fun\, inspiring and stimulating. My work can be seen in Alex Anderson’s books\, “Keep Quilting” and “Neutral Essentials” with Alex Anderson and on The Quilt Show every Saturday. Personally\, whether alone or with others\, I find my time quilting to be special and rejuvenating. Creatively\, I enjoy the challenge of creating new patterns with a traditional spin. Together these two aspects of quilting make a perfect blend for a life journey.
