President’s Message – 10/21

Hi fellow quilters!

What a wonderful start of a “new year!” It was so good to see so many smiling faces and hear your enthusiasm for our programs.  While there have been a few bumps in the road, we all have kept a positive attitude and a “can do” approach and that seems to be paying off.  It looks like we’ll be back to having an in person Quilt Show in May (actually 4/29-5/1) and we’re working on our in-person meetings.

Wasn’t our speaker, Giucy Giuce, fun and informative?!  We look forward to hearing from those who took his workshop and seeing your work.  Hopefully  you’ll post photos on Facebook and Instagram (with lots of hashtags! — the more #’s the greater the audience).

Speaking of Social Media, we’re looking for someone willing to be our Social Media “expert.”  It simply requires posting members’ photos onto the two guild sites. The more exposure we have the more interest we’ll attract.  If you’re interested, contact Jody Sullivan or Karen Carlson for access information.

We hope to see a lot of you at our Fall Social (10/9 [rain date 10/16]) at North Salem Ambulance Corps.  There will be an opportunity to view and bid on Comfort Quilts’ Summer Project Quilts, buy pins and boutique quilt kits and bags of books, renew your membership and have your photograph taken for the directory if you haven’t already, and get advice at “The Doctor is In” consulting table.  And most importantly, you’ll be able to visit with each other in person!

Julia McLeod (online) October 19th and 20th will lecture on “Everything But Cotton” with a next day workshop “Starting with Silk”.

Sarah Nishiura (online) November 16th will lecture on “Home”. Her workshop date will be later, Wednesday December 1st,  “Deconstructing Design”.

Zoom lecture links are sent out a couple days beforehand, recording links for those lectures that can be recorded are sent out a couple days after.   Workshops are not recorded.

The cost of a one day workshop is $50.00 for NSQG members, non-members are welcome (based on availability) for a fee of $70.  The cost for a two day workshop varies, check specific workshop information for details.
All workshop sign-ups are subject to availability, no refunds unless workshop is cancelled or overfilled.

October Workshop Description

Online via Zoom.

Julia McLeod – Starting with Silk Workshop – Oct. 20, 2021 – 9am-4pm

Kits available, $30, or provide your own.  Kits must be ordered by October 6th.

Silk is one of the most gorgeous materials, but it can also be one of the most challenging to work with. For the quilt-maker who wants to work with silk, this workshop gives you the techniques and tips you need to tame this slippery fabric.

Many of us have silk treasures from trips abroad, neckties or prom dresses that are too special to cut up so we leave them tucked away in a drawer or box. It’s time to get them out and make something beautiful!

Are they really silk? We’ll examine ways to determine fiber content, including the burn test.

We will then cover two ways to work with silk: First, a very free, improvisational piecing technique and second, a foundation piecing method that gives ultra-precise results.

Working with your stash, you’ll construct elements in these two techniques that can be combined into a small, pillow-sized finished piece.

$30 kits can be provided for this class (order by October 6th), or a comprehensive supply list can help you get set up with everything you need. Don’t have much more than a few neckties to work with? Combine them with your regular quilters cotton from your stash.

Comfort Quilts

Quilts from September’s CQ meeting

Right now the upcoming CQ meeting dates at NSVAC are Wednesdays, 10am-2pm – Oct. 6 & 20, Nov. 3 & 17, and Dec. 1 & 15.  Vaccination required, no lunch table setup, eating either outside or at your table spot is fine.

At our Fall Social, Comfort Quilters will display their Summer Project quilts, “Mad About Plaid”.  There will be a mini raffle for one or more quilts.  Boutique Quilt Kits will also be for sale.

All members are welcome to contact comfortquilts@northernstarquilters.com to join in making Comfort Quilts quilts or to make any charity quilt requests or to make any fabric donations.

2022 Raffle Quilt “Bright Star”

Pre-selling raffle tickets for BRIGHT STAR, our NSQG raffle quilt, at the Fall Festival at Somers Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

Come see our beautiful 2022 Raffle Quilt, BRIGHT STAR at NSQG’s Fall Social, Oct 9th. This year’s quilt was coordinated by Judy Gignesi and a group of Guild members. Thank you Angela Vertucci, for your beautiful job of quilting.  Raffle tickets will be distributed at our December Guild meeting or mailed. This year’s charity recipient is Friends of Karen of North Salem, NY.

You may remember that last year, I had asked members who were making masks, to donate a quilt square made from mask scraps, and I created a quilt that represented 45 mask-makers from 17 different states.  The quilt hung at the ArtsWestchester gallery show “Together ApART: Creating during Covid”.  The next chapter in the story is that over Labor Day Weekend, I sold the quilt.  Today, I presented a check for the full sales price of the quilt ($1000) to CHHOP (Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill)  I’d like to thank everyone in NSQG who helped by donating a square, and especially to Rosemary DePaola, who quilted it for me.

As of September 29th, 141 people have renewed their membership for 2021-2022. This means there are more than 45 people who have not yet renewed.  We hope you will take a moment to remind your friends to send in their dues!

A drawing was held at the September meeting which included the names of all of those members who renewed their membership by Sept. 1st.   A $50. voucher toward an NSQG workshop was won by Barbara Oudheusden and Caroline Naddeo.  Congratulations!

Guild Photo Project Update

More than half of you have emailed your photos to us for inclusion in the Membership Directory. I hope those members who have not yet participated in this project to connect names with faces will consider doing so in the coming month. Happy Fall Everyone!

It was great seeing everyone again last month.  We look forward to seeing everyone who can attend our in person Fall Social at NSVAC on October 9th.  We have some fun activities planned.  Please reach out to Mother Nature and request her cooperation in providing great weather on that day 🙂

The Global Quilt Connection All Star Sampler Platter Event took place this past weekend.  The guild-wide subscription provided us all with a great opportunity to tune in and watch some great instructors and preview their classes. We hope you were able to take advantage and enjoy this amazing event.

The format of our December meeting is still being determined but we will be providing some holiday fun no matter where and when.

Lastly, we have some updated information regarding the SIG’s.  Diane Linker after hosting the Long Arm SIG has passed on the baton.  Thank you Diane for all of your past contributions.  And, Roni Gerhardt is offering a SIG “All things Lori Holt”.  Click HERE for updated details on all SIGs.

Quilt Show - Lisa Alfonzetti

We have plans underway for an in-person Quilt Show, April 30th and May 1st 2022 at SUNY/Purchase.  Yes we are excited!
We have a team getting started on all the prep that goes into making a great show, but we need volunteers to take the lead in the following areas.  You will have the full support of the rest of the Quilt Show Committee to insure that your job is manageable and successful.  Join us!  If you are interested but hesitant, grab a friend and do it together!

Open Positions for the 2022 Quilt Show Committee
  • Admissions – Buses & Groups – Communicate the news of our show to other guilds and shops
  • Admissions – Box Office Sales – Coordinate the operation of the Box Office on both days of the show
  • Catalog/Cards – Working with pre-made templates, this is a job for someone with good computer skills.
  • Concessions – With a separate room across the hall from the gymnasium for food, we can explore either a food vendor to supply our needs for the day, or possibly the use of food trucks.
  • Publicity
  • Quilt Registration Assistant – work with the current Quilt Registration Coordinator, you will be part of the behind the scenes operation that makes the Quilt Show happen
  • Volunteers – Bring your organizational skills to this job, coordinating the “day of show” volunteer needs.
