President’s Message – 06/24

As this guild year draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone, both on the board and in the guild for helping to make this year such a success.  We look forward to a wonderful year to come.

From the feedback we’ve been getting, our quilt show was a very positive and enjoyable experience for everyone who attended.  Much thanks to Deb Warren and her committee for again pulling off two great days.  To all of our volunteers, we could not have done this without your help! Thank you, thank you, thank you….

We hope to see many of you at the Salad Supper, a relaxing chance to socialize with friends and have a bite to eat.   Please join us at Fox Lane on June 12th (reminder-date change from original June19th) at 6 pm.   Please bring a dish (not necessarily a salad!) to feed 6-9 people.  Details in the hospitality section.

Warmest wishes for an enjoyable summer.  We will be posting our meeting dates for next year once confirmed with Fox Lane.

CONGRATULATIONS to the winner of our quilt ‘Parfait’, Claudia Milne, who resides in Stamford, Ct. She purchased her ticket at our Quilt Show.

CONGRATULATIONS to the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, they will be receiving a very generous check at our June Salad Supper.

Quilt Show Notes

Thank you again to everyone for volunteering your time to make the 2024 Quilt Show a success!  I received many compliments about the beautiful quilts, Irene’s lectures, the demonstrations, the vendors, and overall, just a great show.

Now – let’s get ready for 2025!
The board has voted, and we are moving forward with our Guild Quilt Show for 2025 – it will be # 47!

In order for the show to be so successful – we have to depend on volunteers from the Guild – as well as friends and family helpers.
Statistically speaking – for the 2024 show – the volunteering broke out follows –
– 28 Committee Head Positions
– 150 Volunteers filled over 220 job slots

For 2025 – we will have 30 Committee Head positions and I am sure we will have just as many volunteer job slots available.
Please think about joining the QS team as a Committee Head, I will start to solicit committee members in August/September.  Specific job volunteer sign-ups will start in Feb/March 2025.

Membership Renewal

We will welcome Membership Renewals for the new 2024-25 guild year.  Please bring a check or cash for $45, forms online or at the Sign-in Table at our final meeting of this season, June 12.  Especially if you’ve signed up for our 2024-25 popular workshops, don’t lose your spot because your dues haven’t been paid!

It was great to see old friends and meet newer members at the show! The Membership table was bustling. A big thank you goes out to Rene Bracken, Margaret Cibulsky, Peggy Martin, Nancy Mirman and Caroline Naddeo for doing a great job of sharing their experiences of the guild with those who stopped by and expressed interest in joining our group.

Joanne and I would like to welcome the 19 new members who joined the guild at the show or in the weeks following it. If you live near one of these people, please think about reaching out and welcoming them. Maybe you will discover a new friend to carpool to meetings with!

As our membership grows, it becomes increasingly important that you remember to wear your name badge at meetings. If you haven’t yet picked up yours, it will be available at the Membership table at the June meeting.  The Membership Directory is regularly updated. It’s always a good time to send us your photo! We want to know who you are!

  • Quilt Retreat Signups

    If you or a group of friends wants to run the Ugly Fabric Auction for May, 2025, please contact Rona Spar at activities@northernstarquilters.com.  It is really a lot of fun to see what others consider ‘ugly,’ and to get an early preview of what has been donated.  This year’s auction raised about $1000 for Northern Star.  Please step up to help.

2025 Quilt Challenge

TIES AND SCARVES

Format:

  • Maximum perimeter is 80” (any shape you choose that fits this size is acceptable, i.e., square, rectangle, hexagon, circle, star, etc.)
  • Primary fabric should be neckties or dress scarves. Fabrics should  be recognizable as such.  The idea of the challenge is to utilize neckwear fabrics retired from the workplace, ties or dress scarves that people used to wear to work before the business casual era.  Note: woolen scarves and outerwear are not appropriate for this challenge.
  • Neutral background and enhancement fabrics may also be used, but the focus should be the fabric of the neckties/scarves.
  • Embellishments may also be used.
  • Use any technique: piecing; paper piecing; applique; collage; etc.
  • The quilt must have a label with the maker’s name and, if you wish, a quilt name.
  • The quilt must have a quilt sleeve or other hanging mechanism.
  • Normally, a quilt should have 3 layers: top, batting and back. To accommodate our fiber arts members, this rule can be adjusted to meet your artistic viewpoint.
  • This challenge is open to NSQG members ONLY.

THE QUILT SHOW IS HERE!  “There’s no people like Show People.”  Not only are you going to see magnificent quilts but we are having an amazing program.  Irene Roderick will be presenting three unique lectures and don’t forget that the room will be filled with friends and family and other quilters.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Our May meeting on Wednesday the 15th will feature our annual Ugly Fabric Auction.  Bring your cash and be prepared for a great time!  The committee has told us the fabrics this year are going to be quite special.

There are still some spaces available for the Lancaster trip.  If you are still sitting on the fence about this, the time is now. Bring your checkbook to the quilt show as we will have a booth there for sign-ups and hope to finish filling up the bus.

    Our first retreat for next year is scheduled for Tuesday November 5 – Thursday November 7 at the Center at Mariandale, Ossining NY.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in what you love and be surrounded by others who love the same.  A two night, six meal stay costs $250.  There is also an option to be a “commuter” and forgo the overnight and receive two meals a day for $65 each day.  To sign up, contact Jody Sullivan at jodysull@optonline.net.

March Lecture by Daisy Dodge

Flowers are blooming and so is our guild.  This is our busy season with many exciting things happening.

We hope you are all putting the finishing touches on your quilts for what we expect is going to be a fantastic quilt show. Don’t forget to sign up to volunteer at the show.  We ask that all members sign up for at least one 2-hour slot.  You will receive one free admission (maximum 2) for every two hours that you work.  For those of you entering a quilt for the first time to our show, please remember your quilts need a sleeve on the back and a number in the corner which you will receive in the mail.  Quilt drop off is April 27th.  Please refer to the website for any questions and more information.

The Lancaster bus is half full with seats going fast.  Right after the April meeting, we will be opening seats to non-members.  If you plan on joining our quilt trip, please get your money in now.

Quilt Show Notes

1.  Thanks to all who have registered quilts.   It’s going to be an amazing display! Quilt number labels and drop-off information letters should be received by the week prior to Dropoff, Saturday, April 27.  Contact Karen Carlson, registrar@northernstarquilters.com, with any questions.

2.  We still need volunteers – click HERE.  Please pitch in – there’s a job for everyone!  Specific volunteer job instructions will be sent to you by that area’s coordinator prior to the show. Any questions, contact the job coordinator or showvolunteers@northernstarquilters.com

3.  Bring your Raffle Baskets and any donated items to the April guild meeting.  Donations of empty baskets in good condition are welcome.   Contact Shelley Lounsbury, Rita Romeu or Kathy Tuttle with any questions.

4. Bring quilt and craft books (no magazines) for the quilt show book sale.   Contact Patricia Loquet with any questions.

Activity Coordinators Needed for 2024-2025 Guild Season

Challenge Coordinator(s) –  Do you have an idea for the 2025 NSQG quilt challenge?   If your challenge is chosen by the board, you will be responsible for informing the members of the challenge, collecting the quilts in March, organizing the voting in April and displaying the challenge quilts with ribbons at the Quilt Show.  Share the job with a friend if desired.  Send your idea along with proposed rules and parameters for your suggestion to activities@northernstarquilters.com.

Super Saturday Coordinator(s) – Encourage members to teach at Super Saturday, make arrangements with the church in Yorktown, coordinate with the Hospitality about lunch and snacks.  This event takes place during February.  Share the job with a friend if desired. Willing to take on this activity?  Contact activities@northernstarquilters.com.

Hi everyone,

The quilt show is just around the corner, and Joanne and I need you! If you feel the guild adds an extra dimension to your quilting life, we hope you will share your enthusiasm and volunteer to work at the Membership table. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, share your stories and encourage potential new members to join (to say nothing of resting your feet)!

NSQG has gained 60 new members so far this year, and our membership currently totals 228! Please join Joanne and I in welcoming Katie Agis of Norwalk, CT, Carol Mann of West Orange, NJ, Anne-Claude Cotty of Briarcliff, Sabrina Lavieri of West Simsbury, CT, Cyntia Busic-Snyder of Morrisville, NY, Jennifer Journey of Millwood, NY and Diane Slonim of Tarrytown.

President’s Message – 03/24

Welcome back to in person meetings. We look forward to seeing you at Fox Lane on Wednesday March 20th at 6pm.

We are busy!  If you are involved in a SIG, those meetings are underway.  If you are interested in joining a SIG, the guild meeting is a perfect place to learn more about them. Hopefully the SIGs and workshops have given you inspiration and you are getting quilts ready for our show the first weekend of May.  Quilt drop off is April 27th! Please remember that quilt registration is now open to non-members so if you would like to show any quilts, please register ASAP so you can be assured that there is room.

If you are planning on joining our Lancaster trip scheduled for September 13-14, please remember to bring a check to register.

We have booked an additional free workshop for ALL our members.  On March 9th, there will be a three hour Zoom workshop with Luke Haynes and Nicole Leth on typography in quilts and Nicole’s Affirmation project.

March 9th - Free Zoom Workshop for All Members

Affirmation Quilts & Quilt Typography

Saturday, 9 March 2024
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET
Zoom link will be emailed to all members a few days before the event, no signup necessary.

Every NSQG member is invited to this free Zoom event during which we will learn about Nicole’s Affirmation Project and then explore different methods by which we can put text onto a quilt!

Quilt Show Notes

1.  Quilt registration is now open!  You can always find all the details on the NSQG website on how to register your quilt including which category to register under, when to drop off your quilt and more!  Remember your quilt does not need to be finished to register – just enough to send a picture and then you have until drop off on April 27 to complete. Contact Karen Carlson, registrar@northernstarquilters.com, with any questions.

2.  Volunteer sign-ups for the 2024 Quilt Show start Friday, March 1, 2024.  Details and signup link can also be found on the NSQG website.  Each member is expected to sign up for one or more shifts. Details about each volunteer job are included in the sign-up details. The show is only a success because of the volunteers!

3.  We will again have a raffle booth at the quilt show this year which so far includes 12 raffle baskets with varying themes and a Bernina 475 sewing machine donated by Lisa Alfonzetti of Pins and Needles.  Our themes include Welcome Baby, Baking, Travel to Quilt, Comfort Quilt Kit and Quilting Essentials, Pre-K Reading, Pillows by Karen Griska, Birdfy Smart Bird Feeder, Dog Lovers, Quilts and Cocktails, and Beads and Jewelry Making. The raffle basket committee would welcome any new offers of raffle baskets!  Each basket should contain new merchandise valued at least $100.  Baskets will be due by the April guild meeting.  All proceeds from the raffle booth will go to programs for our guild.  Donations of pre-owned empty baskets are welcome.   Please contact Shelley Lounsbury, Rita Romeu or Kathy Tuttle.

4.  Help Fill a Basket – Donations Needed!  Bring to guild meetings or Comfort Quilts.

  • Narcita Medina is making a GLOBAL FABRICS basket and is looking for donations of ethnic fabric (1/4 yard minimum) to include in her collection.  Please label fabric with country of origin.
  • Shelly Lounsbury is requesting NEW books (or like new) for ages 3-4, not board books, for the Pre-K Reading basket.   Please contact Shelly before donating to avoid duplicates.

5. I’m hoping many of you will be ‘spring cleaning’ and have lots of quilt and craft books and patterns to donate to the Quilt Show Book Sale. Questions?  Contact Patricia Loquet.

  • Collections will take place at the March and April meetings.
  • Donations will be accepted at Comfort Quilts as well
  • We are NOT collecting magazines.
  • Items must be clean, complete, in good condition, and odor free.
  • Bring in boxes or sturdy reusable bags, NOT paper or plastic bags.

Hello to all!

You know that Spring is around the corner when the quilt show Volunteer Sign Up sheet appears at the first in-person guild meeting of the year. Joanne and I look forward to seeing you at the show and invite you to sign up to volunteer at the Membership table if you are interested in sharing your experience of the guild to visitors who might be interested in joining. Last year, 17 people became members at the show!  This is a great job for a person who prefers to remain seated.

Please join us in welcoming three new members to NSQG. They are Carole Simonetti or Ossining, Meryl Dinowitz-Eskridge of Congers, Shelley Stricker of Mahway, NJ and Anne-Claude Cotty of Briarcliff. The membership has risen to 219 people.

If you are a new member and have not yet received your membership folder, we invite you to stop by the Membership table and pick one up at the March meeting. Several membership badges are missing their owners and are ready to be claimed.

We meet from 9:30 to 1:30 at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Daniel Rd, North Salem, NY.  Infrequently, meetings need to be cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute.  If in doubt or coming for the first time, please check.  You can stay for all or part of the time. Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, batting, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

Comfort Quilts welcomes all interested NSQG members, so consider joining the fun!

Here’s hoping that the cold weather has given you lots of time for quilting.

Remember our Quilt show is only 3 months away!

Exciting news.  Our wonderful trip to the Lancaster Quilt show is back! Our new trip coordinator, Christine Bunke, has been hard at work organizing and making plans for the bus and hotel stay.  She has arranged for stops at 3 quilt shops along the way. Please see further information in the newsletter.  We expect to sell out so if you are interested, please contact Christine asap and get your name on the list.

Just a reminder that our February meeting is Wednesday the 21st at 6pm.  Ann Johnston is our speaker. The meeting will again be on  Zoom and you will all be receiving the link a few days before.

If you are new to the guild, the best way to meet everyone is to come to our meetings and get involved.  Starting March we are back in person at Fox Lane HS.

Hi everyone,

As I write this article, the weather is cold and rainy, but what better time to spend the day quilting!

Our guild continues to expand! Our latest membership tally is 214.  With the addition of many new members, Joanne and I encourage you to wear your name badges at meetings. Associating a name with a face can be a great way of getting to know one another.   Name badges for new members will be available for pick up at the Membership table on March 20th, our next in-person meeting.

Please join us in welcoming Nancy Scotford of the Bronx, Catherine Mahon of Poughkeepsie, Jamie Hasl from Somers, Susan Zuckerman of Croton-on-Hudson and Valerie Zeman from Cortland Manor.

We recently sent a survey to new members to get an idea of how they had heard about the guild. Thanks to Karen Carlson for her technical assistance with this project. Here are the results:

  • Several respondents reported that the guild had been recommended to them by an NSQG member.
  • A few other new members decided to join after attending our show.
  • Another major source of referrals was Pins and Needles; many thanks to Lisa Alfonzetti for her support of NSQG!
  • A few people have returned to NSQG now that they have retired or their children have grown up.
  • We were surprised to find that no one mentioned hearing about the guild through social media.

Thank you to each and every person who, in one way or another, has been a guild ambassador this year!

Barbara Glab’s Holiday Trunk Show

2024 is starting off with a bang!

We have a number of new events being planned for the new year. Our established Improv SIGs have become so successful that we are introducing a third new group. Please contact Rita Romeu if you would like more information.  An event that you are not going to want to miss is our new bus trip to the Lancaster Quilt show.  In previous years this was one of our most successful events and we are so excited to be bringing it back.   Mark your calendar for Friday and Saturday, September 13th and 14th. Christine Bunke is graciously chairing this event.  Our Super Saturday classes are filling up but there are still a few openings if you would like to join us.  More activities details in the Latest News section.

Just a reminder that the January and February meetings are by Zoom.  You will receive an email invitation a couple days beforehand so you can easily log on! You do not need to dress for this meeting!

The Lancaster AQS Quilt Show Trip is Back!

Want to go on an overnight quilt show trip?  This trip is being planned for Sept. 13–14, 2024.  You will join a group of NSQG members on a bus trip that includes entry to the AQS show, visiting fabric shops along the way, overnight accommodations and some meals.  Details are still being determined depending on response and number of attendees.  For information, please contact:  Christine Bunke, trip coordinator, chrisme214@aol.com

'Ugly Fabric' Auction in May

Cleaning up after the holidays?  Is your New Year’s resolution to clean out your fabric stash?  The solution is to donate your fabrics to our Ugly Fabric Auction – quilting cottons of at least 1/4 yard.  You can bring your fabric to the March and April guild meetings or to Comfort Quilts.  If you are in the Mahopac area, call Jean Degl (845-628-9130, jdegl@yahoo.com) to make an appointment to drop off fabric, if closer to Mt. Kisco, contact Rona Spar (914-941-4931, ronaquilter@gmail.com).
