President’s Message – 10/25

WOW! What a great turnout for the first meeting of our new year! The room was filled with enthusiasm and lots of diverse ways to share this wonderful art form we all love! It was good to see current members, new members and some returning members many whom shared their latest creations in our show and tell!

All of our year long activities lead up to our Quilt Show which I know many of you have asked about. Please know that we have some challenges this year to overcome and it is our intention to update you at our October meeting.

Charitable Activities

For those of you who were unable to attend the September Guild Meeting, here is a photo of the 2026 Raffle Quilt.
It is called “Shimmering Triangles” and the quilt really does shimmer!!
A huge thank you to Daisy Dodge for choosing the gorgeous colors and piecing the quilt and to Angela Vertucci for her beautiful quilting which complements the design perfectly.
Tickets for the quilt will be distributed at the November Guild meeting.

October Quilt Raffle!

At the October meeting, be sure to admire the display of our CQ summer project quilts, all made with batiks!
Buy lots of raffle tickets ($5 each) and support CQ, winner(s) get to pick the quilt of their choice to take home!

Membership

Thank you to everyone who renewed or became a new member for the 2025/26 Guild year.  We have 196 members as of the end of September.  September 30th was the last date to renew and be included in the print directory.  But, not to worry, all renewals after that date will be included in our online directory which is emailed to all members several times a year.  Carol Sterk and the Membership committee hosted a very successful Meet and Greet for new members in September.  A second Meet and Greet will be held on October 5th at Rosemary DePaola’s home.  If you are a new member interested in attending, please reach out to Shelly or Jeanne. We send a big Thank You to Carol and Rosemary for hosting these events.

We have 8 new members since July 2025. Please stop by the New Member table at our October meeting and welcome Diane Calesso, Arthur Linker, Amy Locitzer, Laura Lustbader, Jane Pinchuck, Joanne Scolaro and Cynthia Sherman.

Lecture 10/15/25 – Traditional Meets Contemporary
Workshop 10/16/25 – Within a Frame

This is the workshop for using your big, beautiful prints! In this workshop, we will create a quilt designed around a central block- known as a medallion quilt. We will think about color, scale, and value as we learn a new technique for scrambling fabrics to create our own unique quilts!

Workshop 11/20/25 – Thread Painting 101

Attention Free Motion Quilters! In this class we will learn how to combine colors and create texture using thread to create a realistic tapestry-like image! Bring a good quality photo and take your stitching skills to the next level with concrete instruction. You will be amazed at what you can create!

  • Red, White and Blue Challenge – Three cheers for those of you who are working on your red, white and blue challenge which is due in March. Follow the rules that are listed in the NSQG website. For questions, contact Nancy Mirman.
  • Member Boutique – you may sell your member-made items at the holiday boutique which will take place at the December 10th guild meeting. Half-table selling spaces cost $10. Contact Rona Spar with your ideas and to register for a space.
  • Batik Blowout Bonanza Bazaar – Yards and yards of gorgeous batik fabric, which have been donated to the guild, will be sold at the November guild meeting. Come to shop and support NSQG
  • Super Saturday – Be prepared to sign up for your favorite member-led class at the October guild meeting. This annual event will take place on January 31st with  a snow date of February 7th. Questions, contact Kathy Tuttle.
  • Ugly Fabric – Please continue to donate fabrics for the Ugly Fabric Auction. Bring donations to the guild meetings or to Comfort Quilts. Questions, contact Liz Titus.
  • Retreats – You can still sign up for the March 20 – 22nd retreat at Mariandale in Ossining. To register, contact Jody Sullivan.
  • SIG News – JOIN A SIG, LEARN A SKILL, MAKE FRIENDS
    Improv I (full) – meeting 1x/month on Zoom and 1x/month in person. Currently working on the individual and group challenge quilts for 2025-2026.
    Improv II – currently meeting the last Thursday of each month at 10AM, alternately meeting on Zoom and in person. To join, contact Rita Romeu.
    Inspired by Art – meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. To join, contact Tamar Drucker.
    Scrappy SIG – meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at 9:30 via Zoom. To join, contact Jennifer Larrabee
    Skills Building SIG – for beginners or those who want to improve their skills. Meet at Fox Lane HS at 5:00 PM before each guild meeting. Just show up!! Info, contact Fran Jacobson

Upcoming Comfort Quilt Meetings

We meet Wednesdays from 9:30 to 1:30 at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Daniel Rd, North Salem, NY.  Infrequently, meetings need to be cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute.  If in doubt or coming for the first time, please check.  You can stay for all or part of the time. Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

Comfort Quilts welcomes all interested NSQG members, so consider joining us!

If you know any member of the guild who is in need of a little ‘sunshine’ for illness, sympathy, or any other reason, please contact secretary@northernstarquilters.com so the guild can send a card.

Requests on how to make a donation to the guild to honor a member or support an activity are occasionally received. Such requests can be accomplished via the DONATE box on our website home page.

NSQG Board, Bylaws, and Policies are available online.
Guild financial reports are available to members by annual email or by request to the treasurer@northernstarquilters.com.
