President’s Message – 02/25

Hi Everyone.

We hope this cold weather is giving everyone a chance to work on their tie challenge and their quilt show quilts.  Quilt registration for the show is planned to start February 14th.  Please take a look at the registration information on our website as there have been some changes.

Christine Bunke is busy working on our Lancaster trip for next fall.  We will have more information at our next meeting.  Please keep open the second weekend in September if you are planning to join us.

We want to remind everyone that our February meeting is on Zoom on the 19th.  Our guest speaker is Alex Anderson.  Her lecture is entitled “Lessons from a Quilty Life” and it will be followed the next day by her workshop, “Faces”,  where we’ll learn to make lighthearted self-portraits.

Tie Challenge – Tie Challenge Quilts are due at the March meeting!  Still feeling a little tied-up?  Hopefully this lovely photo might spur some ideas!  We are all excited to see the old ties come back to life in your quilts.  Check online for all  the parameters for our Tie Challenge 2025.

 Ugly Fabric Auction – Please continue to bring in your unwanted fabrics to Comfort Quilts or the March meeting.  Thank you to so many of you who have already donated to the auction.

Charity Quilt Raffle

Thanks again to all of you who have already sent in your raffle ticket payments.

Just a gentle reminder to return your ticket stubs and payment as soon as you can!

Over the last two years, in large part due to your generosity, we were able to present our charities checks for over $5,000.  We would love to be able to do the same for Mt. Tremper Outdoor Ministries this year and help support camp experiences for City children who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

We are now looking for our local charity for 2026!

Membership

Hi everyone,

As I write this article, the weather is cold and breezy. What a great time of year to spend the day indoors quilting!

Our guild continues to expand! Our latest membership tally is 224. Please join us in welcoming Katharine Heller of Pound Ridge and Debra Bloomgarden of Mt. Kisco.  With the addition of many new members, Joanne and I encourage you to wear your name badges when you attend guild events. Associating a name with a face can be a great way of getting to know one another.   Name badges for new members will be available for pick up at the Membership table at the March meeting.

It’s not too soon to think about the show volunteer jobs you might like to try. If you value your membership in the guild and enjoy meeting new people, we’d love to have you as a volunteer at the Membership table.

Some January Comfort Quilts

Comfort Quilts

Thanks to the generosity of members in our guild, 29 quilts and 2 comforters were shipped to Hendersonville, North Carolina on December 5, 2024 for distribution to survivors of Hurricane Helene in the region of Asheville, North Carolina. Laura Jones, president of the Western North Carolina Quilt Guild, received the quilts and arranged for them to be taken to a very small community near Barnardsville, NC, where they were distributed before the December holidays.

The response to our request for donations to pay the shipping costs was so great that we were also able to make a $280.00 contribution in mid-December to Manna FoodBank, a primary distributor of food and other essentials to people in need in the region.

Kate Longo and Shelley Lounsbury would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you!” to everyone who participated in this project.  

Upcoming Comfort Quilt Meetings

We meet Wednesdays from 9:30 to 1:30 at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Daniel Rd, North Salem, NY.  Infrequently, meetings need to be cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute.  If in doubt or coming for the first time, please check.  You can stay for all or part of the time. Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

Comfort Quilts welcomes all interested NSQG members, so consider joining us!

If you know any member of the guild who is in need of a little ‘sunshine’ for illness, sympathy, or any other reason, please contact secretary@northernstarquilters.com so the guild can send a card.

Requests on how to make a donation to the guild to honor a member or support an activity are occasionally received. Such requests may now be accomplished via the DONATE box on our website home page, click on Make a Donation.

NSQG Board, Bylaws, and Policies are available online.
Guild financial reports are available to members by annual email or by request to the treasurer@northernstarquilters.com.
