Super Saturday – February 17th 2018 at Yorktown Presbyterian Church
Super Saturday will be here before you know it. Registration continues at the January meeting, after that call or e-mail me with your class request. The fee is $20, payable in advance, for one class for the whole day and lunch.  Eight different classes are offered, as well as an “open sew” session; they are detailed on our website.
It promises to be an exciting and educational day as well as great socializing with fellow guild members. I hope to see many of you there.

Our December lecture is by Natalya Aikens,  ‘Sustainable Practices in Art Quilts’.

What materials can you use in an art quilt? Anything you can stitch through! There is a certain thrill you get when buying new fabric or thread, but what if you instead got a thrill from figuring out new uses for old materials? Natalya goes through all the things you can stitch by hand and by machine to add an unexpected and wonderful texture to your artwork.

Super Saturday on February 17th 2018

We will continue registration at the next meetings, but feel free to call or e-mail me with your class request. The fee is $20, payable in advance, for one class for the whole day and lunch.  The location is again the Yorktown Presbyterian Church on Route 202 and 35.  This is a single-level venue, friendly and comfortable, spacious and warm.  Our aim is to enable any interested guild member to participate in the event.

We still really need some volunteers to help out on Tuesday nights during the meeting and at the lecture!

Based on the response we received about offering two workshops when Maria Shell visits our Guild in April, we will be going ahead with that idea.  In addition to the regularly scheduled Wednesday workshop on April 18, we will be offering a second one the following day.  People are invited to sign up for one or two days, and if you want to only do one class it can be either Wednesday or Thursday.

We are in the process of determining which classes we will be offering.  If we make that decision before our November meeting, signups will begin that evening.  If the decision has not been made, signups will start in December.

Payment for Classes – Remember our policy is to pay for a workshop when you signup.  Until we receive your payment, you are not guaranteed a seat in the class. Please abide by this policy to make the job easier for our Program Chair.

Lecture – 11/14/17 – TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A RIBBON WHORE(der)!

Our very own Debbie Bein has been winning ribbons for her art quilts at our shows since joining Northern Star as a novice quilter in 2002. In this hour-long fun-filled presentation, Debbie will share the secrets of her “totally unintentional and still amazing” success, and provide us with an inside scoop on what it is, exactly, that she does with all those ribbons!

Workshop – 11/15/17 – LET GO-JUST SEW!          

We  will learn a new quilt technique, launched TO OUR MEMBERS ONLY, during this full-day workshop. Debbie claims (and has testimonial support by our expert quilters Micki Tedeschi and Mary Cannizzaro) that her new pattern makes the EASIEST and FASTEST quilt EVER! BUT….quilters must learn to let go of some traditional rules and bend some rules with this great new technique.

Participants will choose one of several suggested formats while learning how to work fearlessly with piecing, connecting and quilting bias triangles. Using pre-cut squares, attendees will cut, piece, batt, and quilt a small project in the class, or begin one of the larger, more ambitious quilt projects to finish at home. Quilters will be truly amazed at how quickly and easily this quilt comes together – with this new technique a quilter can make a lap size, baby or twin size quilt, start to finish, (NO KIDDING!) in just two short days (or one long one!)

Holiday Boutique this year will take place in the hall outside of the auditorium starting at 6:00.  We will have several tables of items made by members, as well as fabric and notions from Comfort Quilts.  Bring extra money with you that evening so you can get a jump on your holiday shopping! Lancaster – Sign up for our annual trip to the AQS Lancaster Quilt Show! Our trip takes place from March 23-24, 2018.  We will depart early Friday morning, spend our day shopping in Lancaster County, have dinner at Miller’s Smorgasbord, and spend the  night at the Marriott Courtyard in Lancaster.  We will spend Saturday at the quilt show, returning home Saturday evening.

The cost of the trip is $170 per person based on double occupancy.  The cost includes transportation, dinner and lodging on Friday night, breakfast on Saturday morning, and entry to the quilt show. Guild Challenge – I hope you are working on your entry for this year’s challenge – Quilts Inspired By Doors.  The quilts will be collected at the January meeting and voting will take place at the February meeting.  Ribbons will be awarded for Most Creative, Best Use of Color, and Best Embellishments – First, Second, and Third Place ribbons in each category. February’s Program, the “Ugly Fabric Auction“, is back by popular demand and not to be missed!  Our wonderful Auctioneers Sandy and Carolyn, who are also talented quilters will  join us again.  I’m accepting Ugly Quilt Fabrics now thru January.  Remember one Quilter’s Ugly is another Quilter’s Beautiful Masterpiece! At the November meeting, we will view the projects created by the members from the September tutorials.  Members of the group, please send me the project following the directions I sent via email and bring your laptops.  If you are curious about EQ, come by and look over our shoulders!

Lecture – THE ROOTS OF MODERN QUILTING

In this one-hour program, Bonnie shares her study and findings about the development of The Modern Quilt Guild. This early 21st Century quilting revival has taken the quilting world by storm with a fresh, new look characterized by a variety of factors. This slide show and lecture, along with a few examples of actual quilts, traces the founding of this international phenomenon and its roots in social media. 

Workshop – INSTANT IMPROV

This workshop presents a laid-back approach to design, forcing quilters to work with what they have. Participants will make improvisational quilt blocks by combining a few of their own scraps with those supplied in class. We will let loose with wonky strips and off-kilter squares in this fun-filled journey down the improv road. This class works well for those who have always wanted to bring out their inner abstract artist. This workshop is best for those who will allow themselves to be open to asymmetrical, abstract, and generally ‘wonky’ designs.

The Boutique is open to all members to sell their wares at the November guild meeting. This year it is from 6 to 7 p.m. on November 14 in the lower lobby.  The table fee is $25, and members can share a table with another member.

Super Saturday is scheduled for February 17, 2018 and we looking for instructors for the day.   It will take place at the same place as last year, the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown on Crompond Road (Rte. 35/202 and 132).   We need to start lining up the classes.  Please think of what you can do to teach your fellow members.  If you have acquired special skills by taking a class or learning from a book, consider passing on your knowledge.  Traditionally, it is a fun-packed, highly educational day which includes a lunch provided by the guild.

Wednesday, September 27 – Making a Scooter Mini Bag

Joan Radell of Bucklebee Bags will be teaching some basic bag making skills as we make a Scooter Mini bag.  This is a petite crossbody bag with places for all your essentials.  It also makes a great holiday gift!  Pattern and hardware will be provided and you only need to supply two or three fat quarters and some interfacing.

 

Wednesday, October 18 – Instant Improv

Bonnie Dwyer will help bring out our inner artist as she teaches a laid-back approach to design. Special Events – 2018 Guild Challenge

Quilts Inspired By Doors – This year’s quilt challenge is about using doors for inspiration. It can be a front door to your home, a gate to your beautiful garden, a barn door, glass door, a sliding door, French door, a door to a phone booth, tree house door, cabinet door, garage door, door on your car or even a cute dog house door. Thank you to all who presented at the Domestic Machine Quilting SIG this year.  There have been so many great ideas to help us in our machine quilting journey.  We will not be meeting in May or June.  Helen is stepping down as facilitator so if anyone would like to continue the group please let Helen Borland or Donna Chambers know that you are interested in the position.
EQ SIG are working on establishing some goals for the group.  New members welcome! You only need to have an interest in EQ, even if you don’t own it. We will meet in the cafeteria at 5:45pm at the May meeting.

There are still openings for this month’s workshop, “Glue and Paste Flowers” given by our speaker Juanita Yeager.  Juanita has won multiple awards and ribbons for composition, color and design in local, national and international competitions.  To quote her “My art is about color”.

The workshop, “Glue and Paste Flowers”, is so much more than just gluing and pasting.  In this machine applique class you will learn Juanita’s way of creating large scale flowers with prepared edge shapes.  She will teach her technique called glue-pasting that she uses when making her large floral wall quilts.  Only for the workshop it will be in a scaled down version to fit a class project. You will also learn how to machine quilt for dimension and texture.  Learn how to finish you quilt with a facing that enhances the “art” look of the class project.

It should be a wonderful day for quilters of all skill and interest levels.  Please join us for a day full of laughter and learning from this very talented quilter.

The EQ sig will meet in the cafeteria -lead by Mary Canazzarro.  No need to bring laptops at this meeting –  just a time to sign up and give a little info about experience in using – or thinking of using – EQ. Everyone is welcome.  Even if they don’t have EQ but would like to get info about it.

SIG Art Quilters will meet at 5:45 at the back of the cafeteria before the February meeting.  Please bring your Art Challenges if they are done.  They are due in March.  February’s play time activities to bring in are  thread work, bobbin work, and/or hand stitching.

 The Domestic Machine Quilting SIG will not meet in February so we will have a chance to view the challenge quilts.

 

 The paper piecing SIG will not be meeting in February, due to Super Saturday.  

UGLY FABRIC AUCTION
 Everyone’s Talking about THE UGLY FABRIC AUCTION!!!!!  Join us for this fun filled FABRIC EVENT during our February 28th Guild Meeting.  Lots of Ugly Ugly, Ugly Beautiful, Ugly Interesting Fabrics have donated.  There are fat quarters, 1/2 -4 yard pieces and colored coordinated bundles. Many great finds remember, ” one woman’s ugly is another woman’s inspiration. We’ll even have a few prizes the most fabric purchased and we’ll vote for the person who thinks she bought the UGLIEST fabric. We will begin the evening with at 5:45pm Sneak Preview. Bring Cash ? Some bids will start as low as 50cents.

Our December lecture will be by Lisa Shepard Stewart.  Her lecture is a lovely combination of showing her wonderful African fabric collection and many different ways to use them.  She has published three books, writes for many fabric related subjects, teaches and lectures around the world.  Her visit should be an exciting, informational lecture.

SIGs

The Domestic Machine Quilting SIG will be meeting before the December guild meeting at 5:45pm in the back of the cafeteria.  Please bring any machine quilting projects you are working on to share and/or discuss with the group.  We did not have any volunteers for December for a specific topic so Helen will discuss some things she learned from the Cindy Needham Craftsy course.

The Art Quilters will be meeting at 5:45pm at the back of the cafeteria before the December Guild Meeting. We have outgrown our space in the teacher’s lounge and this location should give us more room.  Don’t forget to bring in your “play exercises” for the month. December is washes, drawing or painting on fabric, and/or beads. Also, bring your Show and Tell.

The Landscape SIG will meet Saturday, December 3rd from 1pm to 3pm at the Astoria Bank in Somers.

The Paper Piecing SIG will meet Saturday, December 17th from 10am to 1pm at Pooah’s Home in Ossining.  The group will continue working on “African Violets.”
