President’s Message – 04/26

It was wonderful to see all of those who attended our return to in person meetings! I am also glad that we are finally experiencing some warmer temperatures and that we have made it through one of the worst winters that I can remember! My urge to spring clean has hit and I find myself sorting through fabric to donate to our “Ugly Fabric Auction”, reevaluate my works in progress and begin new projects! I must say the lecture and class by Gyleen Fitzgerald was one of the best I have attended and I have been happily making pineapple blocks with my never ending scrap bin!

This month’s activities will also provide much inspiration with our AQS bus trip, Ellen Blalock’s lecture and another Sit and Sew event! I look forward to seeing all of you and seeing our Challenge quilts!

Ellen Blalock is our April lecturer.

This lecture gives a brief history of artists that use the quilt medium to produce art quilts that address social, political and current affairs in their community and the world. She will discuss the story development of several quilts she produced from two or more quilt series that address violence, racism, identity, trauma and mental illness. The narrative of these quilts show connections to her life as a journalist and documentarian. For quilt groups she covers her journey to adapt quilting techniques to her work. She picks several quilts and explains construction and problem solving with a theme.

Giucy Giuce joins us for two May workshops.

  • Controlled Chaos – the first workshop: Join Giucy Giuce as he demonstrates his improv sewing to his foundation paper pieced approach in this BRAND NEW workshop, Controlled Chaos: An FPPers Approach to improv.
  • RE- Modular Foundation Paper Piecing – the second workshop:
    Students will learn modular foundation paper piecing with RE Quilt, a uniquely customizable pattern. He’ll cover all sorts of looks and styles. Triangles, flying geese, stripes, wonky shapes. Not only will we be learning this exciting approach to improv sewing, but we will also dive heavily into color and talk about value.
    PATTERN FEE: $10/student for PDF of templates + printouts for class.

Share a Project Display for June Guild Meeting

At the June Guild meeting, any member can display a small project you wish to share with your quilting friends.  All you have to do is display your item on the table and provide a pile of instructions for distribution to those who are interested.  No need to stand at the table.  No charge. Email to me at ronaquilter@gmail.com if you want to reserve a space & a description of the item you want to show.

MEMBERSHIP

How nice it was to be together again at our March meeting.  Many of the 85 attendees commented what a pleasure it was to see fellow Guild members in person.   There was a lot of chatter and an expansive Show and Tell.  We look forward to seeing even more members at our April meeting.

The annual membership fee for NSQG will have a slight increase for the year 2026/27 beginning July 1, 2026.  The new annual membership fee will be $50; a five dollar increase from its current rate.  As we all know, there isn’t anything costing less these days.  The Board determined this increase was necessary to maintain the high standards of our programs and activities.   Considering all the Guild offers its members, the annual fee is still a great bargain!   Members will be able to register for the 2026/27 year beginning June 1.  As in past years, everyone will receive an email reminder.

Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

President’s Message – 03/26

Just a week ago, we experienced the 2nd snowstorm of the season!  But rather than dwell on the inconveniences that they caused us all, I prefer to look ahead and focus on some of the wonderful choices our Activity and Programs committees have in store for us.  I am looking forward to the Pineapple class with Gyleen Fitzgerald, the Mariondale Retreat later this month and our AQS bus trip in April!

Please be sure to help out our new Hospitality Chair, Barbara Leader, by bringing a treat to share, especially if your name begins with L, M, N, O.

But most of all, I am looking forward to the return of our in person meetings on March 18th at Fox Lane High School!  It is wonderful to stay in touch during the coldest months of the winter via Zoom, but I miss seeing all of you in person and especially anticipate a great in-person show and tell!

CHARITY QUILT RAFFLE

Just a gentle reminder to return your raffle tickets!

Thank you so much to all those Guild members who have submitted their tickets, proceeds and donations! If you have not received your tickets or would like to purchase more, please let me know.

This year’s beautiful quilt, “Shimmering Triangles,” was organized by Daisy Dodge and quilted by Angela Vertucci and the proceeds will support Neighbors Link in offering programs to help new Latino families in our community.

We are now looking for our local charity for 2027!

March Workshop (in-person)

There is still room in the March workshop with Gyleen Fitzgerald. We have a dozen participants signed up and can accommodate a few more. She is making it easy for us by bringing the book and ruler for participants to purchase.

Even though we won’t hear from Giucy Giuce at a NSQG meeting, he is excited to be with us to teach the two workshops in May, so if you want to experience his wonderful work, there is still room in each.

2027 CHALLENGE SUGGESTIONS  – Due by the end of March

Your proposal must include the topic, size, color(s), method(s) of quilting, voting parameters, and any other pertinent details.  If your challenge is chosen by the board your will be responsible for announcing the challenge, collecting the quilts, arranging  for display/voting, ribbons, and hanging the quilts at the next quilt show. President’s Message – 02/26

With one giant snowfall down and the possibility of another this weekend, we may define this week in time with the question of “What project were you working on?” Rather than “Where were you in the storm(s) of 2026!

Our Activities and Program chairs have many offerings for us to take advantage of! I’m thankful for these stay at home days so I can catch up on a few Comfort Quilts, the 250th birthday of our country Challenge and start a few other quilts that have been on the back burner.

Thank you to those who attended our Zoom meeting in January and I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting in February which will also be a Zoom!

– The January two-part Zoom workshop with Christine Barnes was a great success. “I really enjoyed the first Zoom session with Christine Barnes. It was fun to work with the group and experiment with our fabrics. I thought she was very organized and encouraged a lot of good discussion.” enthused one participant.
I attended the second workshop, (to learn how to conduct a Zoom workshop for Programs) and was impressed with how positive she was with gentle suggestions to improve the luminosity of the practice blocks. Great improvements resulted!

Let’s make an old-fashioned pineapple quilt with a new and contemporary twist. Learn Gyleen’s technique for effortless and precise stitching without paper piecing! Use up all those fabric bits and pieces in your stash. Go scrappy, random, or totally stylized! It doesn’t matter, just plan to join the Pineapple Par-tay! As an added bonus, while you continue stitching, Gyleen will be discussing and demonstrating how to achieve perfect borders, binding, facing, and sleeves. With her tips, your quilts will be sure to be show-ready!

Warm wishes for a Happy, Healthy New Year!  I don’t know about you, but I always love this first month of the new year although it will take me a few weeks to remember to use 2026!

This also begins the first of two months of Zoom Meetings and Workshops which will provide us all with plenty of quilt making choices to fill our time without leaving the comfort of our own sewing rooms!   Please take a few minutes to check out our Zoom class offerings,  our Super Saturday choices,  and to work on your 2026 Challenge Quilt which commemorates the 250th anniversary of our country!   Nancy Mirman has already secured places that will display our challenge quilts for all to see!

Tamar Drucker’s Trunk Show

TREASURER TRAINEE NEEDED!

Let’s talk….

In search of a member(s) who can assist the treasurer as treasurer-in-training. This could be a shared position with one person processing checks and deposits and one doing the data entry.

This job involves recording income, expenses and monthly reports (bank statements etc), collecting and issuing checks and an occasional trip to the bank.  All the records are kept on Quick Books Desktop which is easy to learn and I would be there to help you along the way.   Reports and templates are already set up and former treasurers are always available for help and advice.

Our guild would not be here were it not for the many volunteers who keep it running, please do your part and help with this vital position.

Last Call for Super Saturday

Super Saturday Registration closes on January 19th .

  • Super Saturday is being held January 31st at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown, 2880 Crompond Rd, Yorktown, NY.
  • Classes begin at 9:00 am, unloading can begin at 8:30am.   Enter the circle and park in front of the church to unload your things, then pull around to the back parking lot to park for the day.
  • Coffee and tea will be provided for the morning and a pizza and salad lunch.
  • Class information and supply lists can be viewed on the website: northernstarquilters.com/event/super-saturday.
  • Two workshops are closed: Accidental Landscapes and Potato Chip Quilt.
  • For those who want to Sit N Sew, an area is provided but no one will be present to help with any quilting problems.
    Registration and the $30 fee  is still required to pay for the meals and rental of the church.

RWB Challenge Update

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we will be displaying the Challenge at various libraries from April to December!  Since every library has a different hanging system, please make your hanging sleeve in two sections: leave a 1” space at each side and leave a 2” space in the middle.

I am pleased to announce that the 2026 Challenge will be exhibited in the following libraries:

I would love to have three volunteers to be on the Challenge Committee with me and also would love members who live in the above communities to volunteer when the exhibit comes to their town.
The Committee members will help facilitate the exhibit traveling from library to library.  The Community volunteers will help by hanging the quilts in their library (about two hours) and taking down the quilts at the end of the month (less than one hour).  A Committee member will be at each library to organize hanging the quilts.  I know that since we don’t have a quilt show, you have so much extra time on your hands that I hope to be inundated with calls!

Have An Idea for the 2027 Challenge?

Please send a detailed description of your challenge idea along with the size, rules, voting criteria and any other pertinent information to  ronaquilter@gmail.com or activities@northernstarquilters.com.  Your responsibilities include describing the challenge to the membership, collecting the quilts, setting up voting and distributing ribbons to the winners.  All ideas will be brought to the board which will vote on the winning challenge in the spring.

Our January workshop (Zoom) has been revised. Christine Barnes’ Special Effects with Color! will now consist of two engaging sessions instead of three, and the fee has been reduced to $50 for members and $75 for non-members. 
Join us for an in-depth exploration of the vibrant world of color using just paper, glue, and fabric from your very own stash.  Each session lasts three hours and will be recorded, so you can revisit the content for at least one week.  You don’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity to enhance your color skills and creativity!
Session One: LUMINOSITY
In this session, you’ll uncover the secret to making colors appear as though they are glowing from beneath the surface.

Session Two: TRANSPARENCY
In this session, you’ll explore the illusion that one color lying on top of another, creating a third color where they intersect.

Let’s make an old-fashioned pineapple quilt with a new and contemporary twist. Learn Gyleen’s technique for effortless and precise stitching without paper piecing! Use up all those fabric bits and pieces in your stash. Go scrappy, random, or totally stylized! It doesn’t matter, just plan to join the Pineapple Par-tay! As an added bonus, while you continue stitching, Gyleen will be discussing and demonstrating how to achieve perfect borders, binding, facing, and sleeves. With her tips, your quilts will be sure to be show-ready!

2026 Quilt Raffle

We meet Wednesdays from 9:30 to 1:30 at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Daniel Rd, North Salem, NY.  Infrequently, meetings need to be cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute.  If in doubt or coming for the first time, please check.  You can stay for all or part of the time. Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

Comfort Quilts welcomes all interested NSQG members, so consider joining us!
