President’s Message – 04/25

April showers bring May flowers and hopefully it won’t be raining the weekend of our quilt show.  We’re gearing up to another wonderful show.  Our thanks to Debbie Warren and her incredible committee for working hard to make this a wonderful weekend.  If you haven’t signed up to Volunteer, please do so now.  Remember we ask every guild member to volunteer for at least a two hour shift.

VERY IMPORTANT:  Due to Fox Lane’s spring break, our April 16th meeting is now going to be on Zoom. 

Jo Thomas has scheduled Emilie Trahan as our new speaker and we are very excited.   Emilie has had four quilts win at QuiltCon this year.   She will be discussing her improv process and how she has grown as a quilter. This should be inspiration for us all.

JoAnne Hochstein has been working on a survey of our membership to send out shortly. It is our hope that you will all take the time to fill it out so that we can strive to serve you better.

And speaking of input, we still have positions that need to be filled for 2025-26.  Please consider stepping up and helping us out.  Without you we cannot have a guild or a quilt show. We still need a Chairperson for next year’s quilt show!!

Reminder, emails and related contacts can get ‘hijacked’ and used for scamming, this has happened to guild members, especially board members; anytime an email asks you to do anything unusual especially if money is involved, check the actual email address, do not respond via that email, and as necessary contact the involved person directly using some other method.

Quilt Show Workshop
Sue Benner – Fusing the Grid

Two Day Workshop – May 5 & 6, Millwood Fire House, Millwood, NY
Members – $150, Non-members – $200

Create a series of several art quilts based on the grid. Sue offers many ways to work with rectilinear design using fusible collage as a construction method. This is a great workshop for developing new directions in color, working in a series, and experimenting with silk and other fibers. The techniques and ideas that Sue teaches in this class form the basis for much of her work.

In this workshop you will create 3 abstract art quilts, 16×16” each. Beginning with instructions on making my signature Quilt Canvas, I will teach my method of fused collage, using the structure of a loose grid as a starting point. Building layer by layer, you will construct a field of color and pattern.

I will demonstrate variations on this theme, showing different pathways that you can take each abstraction. The possibilities are endless!  Each quilt can take its own direction and be a unique expression or together they can work as a progression or series.  You can work with traditional cottons, but I encourage adding the   unexpected, including the use of “unruly” fabrics like sheers, lace, silks, and even polyesters.

As for skill, all that is needed for this class is a sense of play and adventure.  A sewing machine is not needed for this class, but if you already have your machine with you, you can add quilting and binding to your creations.

Lancaster Trip – 

It’s time to sign up to participate in the annual NSQG bus trip, September 12th &13th, 2025.  The trip includes stops at 3 quilt shops, lunch, dinner, overnight stay at the Hilton Garden Inn and entry to the show.  Details and registration can be found on the NSQG website.  Hurry to save your space.  Questions, contact Christine Bunke at chrisme214@aol.com

Ugly Fabric Auction –

Happy Spring to everyone!

Our membership has grown to 228 members.  Please welcome our newest member, Kuuipo Fales from Norwalk, CT.

The Membership team invited all members who have joined the guild over the past year to this Spring’s Meet and Greet events. The event planned for members from Southern CT, lower Westchester and the Bronx was cancelled for lack of sign-ups. If you weren’t able to come to an event this Spring, we’d love to see you at one of the Fall events.

As April approaches, it’s time to sign up for show volunteer jobs you might like to try. We hope that those of you who value your membership in the guild and enjoy meeting new people will consider signing up to volunteer at the membership table. Upcoming Comfort Quilt Meetings

  • December 3 & 17 (holiday lunch)
  • Jan. 7 & 21
  • Feb. 4 & 18
  • Mar. 4 & 18

We meet Wednesdays from 9:30 to 1:30 at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Daniel Rd, North Salem, NY.  Infrequently, meetings need to be cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute.  If in doubt or coming for the first time, please check.  You can stay for all or part of the time. Bring your sewing machine, and a light lunch if desired.  Kits, fabric, batting, and basic quilting tools are available for your use.

Comfort Quilts welcomes all interested NSQG members, so consider joining us!
