Quilt Show Workshop
Sue Benner – Fusing the Grid

Two Day Workshop – May 5 & 6, Millwood Fire House, Millwood, NY
Members – $150, Non-members – $200

Create a series of several art quilts based on the grid. Sue offers many ways to work with rectilinear design using fusible collage as a construction method. This is a great workshop for developing new directions in color, working in a series, and experimenting with silk and other fibers. The techniques and ideas that Sue teaches in this class form the basis for much of her work.

In this workshop you will create 3 abstract art quilts, 16×16” each. Beginning with instructions on making my signature Quilt Canvas, I will teach my method of fused collage, using the structure of a loose grid as a starting point. Building layer by layer, you will construct a field of color and pattern.

I will demonstrate variations on this theme, showing different pathways that you can take each abstraction. The possibilities are endless!  Each quilt can take its own direction and be a unique expression or together they can work as a progression or series.  You can work with traditional cottons, but I encourage adding the   unexpected, including the use of “unruly” fabrics like sheers, lace, silks, and even polyesters.

As for skill, all that is needed for this class is a sense of play and adventure.  A sewing machine is not needed for this class, but if you already have your machine with you, you can add quilting and binding to your creations.

Volunteers get free admission for the entire show weekend.

Hello, Quilters!

As you sign up to volunteer at our May quilt show, why not consider putting together a raffle basket for our TAKE A CHANCE raffle booth?  We have room for your special “something”, and  there is still time!  Our booth will display the new Bernette 08 straight stitch sewing machine from Pins and Needles!  Our baskets will include handmade items and lots of fabric, such as a Pantone and Kona “Color of the Year” collection, gorgeous batiks, and international fabrics.  We will have all sorts of quilting notions, and even an AccuQuilt “Go! Me” cutting system with many dies!   We will also have a Keurig Express coffee and milk frother setup, wine from California, a “Bravo!” baking box, fabulous kitchen essentials, beautiful ceramics, a soothing spa collection, a Pre-K skills ensemble and a dog lover’s basket.  It’s all pretty exciting!

Here are the raffle basket guidelines:

• New items only
• The estimated minimum value of each basket or collection should be at least $100.00
• Include a list of the items in your basket
• Wrap your items in clear cellophane or tulle, or bring them to us to wrap for you
• Donations can be brought to Comfort Quilts meetings or to the March guild meeting
• Final due date is by the April Guild meeting

We hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and longer days! With the arrival of our first in-person meeting of the new year, we’d like to remind you to stop by at the Membership table and pick up your name badge.

As I write this article, the weather is cold and breezy. What a great time of year to spend the day indoors quilting!

Our guild continues to expand! Our latest membership tally is 224. Please join us in welcoming Katharine Heller of Pound Ridge and Debra Bloomgarden of Mt. Kisco.  With the addition of many new members, Joanne and I encourage you to wear your name badges when you attend guild events. Associating a name with a face can be a great way of getting to know one another.   Name badges for new members will be available for pick up at the Membership table at the March meeting.

Let us know your challenge idea!

Do you have an idea for the Guild Challenge for 2025-2026?  Have you been percolating a thought about what might challenge our members next year?  If you and a friend or group of friends would like to take on that ‘challenge’, keep the following in mind:

• Send in your idea by the end of March 2025, including rules, parameters and voting criteria.
• Submissions will be presented to the board during the April board meeting, at which time the board will select the idea for the next challenge.
• The winning challenge idea will be announced at the May 2025 guild meeting.
• March 2026 guild meeting – Collect Challenge Quilts
• April 2026 guild meeting – Display and voting for Challenge Quilts

A fun and liberating way to create with your fabric stash. The charm and appeal of Fragments comes from the spontaneous way they are created – there is no measuring, no cutting mistakes and no piecing. With fabric, you have an almost endless variety of color and pattern to choose from that can spark ideas and led you to discover a whole new way of looking at and using your fabric. By ignoring all the old rules and letting unexpected combinations in color, pattern and scale occur, you can bring a freshness and magic to your quilts. I share my #1 secret for combining fabrics.

If you don’t have a large fabric stash, the beauty of making Fragments is that you only need little scraps or fragments

Adding photos and text will be demonstrated and discussed and you’ll be given a chance to do a TAP (Transfer Artist Paper) transfer. Lesley will provide a selection of quotes and images you can use to guide your creation(s).

Individual attention will be given to each student with an emphasis on combining fabrics to create eye-catching design and stunning works of fiber art. You will leave with a stack of ready-to-sew collages and the potential to create a small quilt. Beginners are welcome and encouraged in all of my classes.

Includes a sheet of 4 images for transfer, fusible, and a dive into Lesley’s special scrap stash.

Hi everyone,

With only a month to go in 2024, our membership has reached 220. Please welcome our newest member, Vicki Camerino of Armonk.

As our membership has grown over the past few years, Joanne and I have been working on finding ways of making our newest members feel welcome. We are open to any ideas you might have to bring people together and deepen our connections to one another.  A few of ideas we’ve implemented thus far include:

• Organizing Meet and Greet events at the homes of various members
• Reviving the New Member Table
• Introducing a Membership Directory that includes photos

Of course, ideas are only ideas without the help of a support team to make them come to life. We are looking for volunteers to help out at monthly meetings either by signing members in at the Membership table, hosting a New Member table, or offering ‘tours’ of the room (and activities that are going on) to new members. Please contact us at membership@northernstarquilters.com if you would like to help out. This is a great way of making friends and feeling a part of the guild!

Sandra Lee Workshop

We had a fun day, cutting up quilts! Anxiety-producing at first (who cuts up a favorite quilt!!?) but the results were stunning.

Sandra helped us to visualize where the simple jacket pattern pieces could go, for maximum effect, considering the best use of color, design and sense of movement. Each participant brought a quilt that characterized a focus on the relationship between pattern and color that was pleasing to them, and that relationship was truly transformed as the jacket took shape. It was a new way to look at our quilts!

We went through the steps to fit the pattern pieces to our bodies, how to place them on the quilt, how and when to sew seams and how to finish it all off with binding the edges. While we didn’t finish the jackets in the workshop, we were equipped with the knowledge of how to do it at home.

It was an inspiring day, and hopefully we can organize a fashion show at a future NSQG meeting to show our stunning results!

It’s that time of year:  The Quilt Show raffle tickets are here!

Every year Guild members generously support a worthy charity by selling tickets to their family, friends and neighbors for a chance to win our beautiful Guild quilt. This year the quilt is the stunning “Supernova” and the charity is Mt. Tremper Outdoor Ministries.  Mt. Tremper runs the Herrlich Camp in Patterson, New York, providing an outdoor educational experience for underprivileged children from the five boroughs of New York City.

When you sign in at the November Guild meeting, your raffle booklets will be waiting for you!  Please remember to pick up your envelope.  Selling the tickets is an opportunity to support a wonderful cause and to spread the word about our Guild and our Quilt Show.
We’ll also have a limited number of this year’s show pins available for $5.

Hi everyone,

As I write this report, the days are getting shorter, and the guild is in full swing. Joanne and I ask you to join us in welcoming our three newest members, Lynne Foley of New City, Cory Ethridge of Garrison and Rose Schleupen from Yorktown Heights and returning member, Mayann Weinberg of Stamford, CT.  Our membership currently stands at 219. With the influx of many new members, Joanne and I have decided to reinstitute the NEW MEMBER TABLE hosted by a seasoned member of the guild where newer members can meet each other, ask questions and, most importantly, feel comfortable. If you and a friend would be interested in participating on our Welcome Team, please let us know!

The 2024-2025 Membership Directory will be available for pick up at the Membership Table when you sign in. The online version of the directory will be emailed to you following our November guild meeting. Please watch for it in your inbox. Hint: try not to forget to download it to a file for future reference.

It’s never too late to send in your photo for the online version of the directory. Joanne updates the online directory in February/March and, again, right after the quilt show. It’s always nice to be able to connect a name with a face!

Northern Star Quilters Guild welcomes David M. Taylor on November 20 and 21.  He is an internationally recognized, award-winning art quilter currently residing in Fort Collins, Colorado. His art quilts hang in many private collections worldwide and are highly sought-after.  For the rest of 2024 he is presenting at the Quilt Festival in Houston, and the League of Northern Colorado quilters. Upcoming in 2025 (so far) he is conducting workshops in Colorado, California, Wisconsin, Maine, and New Hampshire. He has taught his fascinating workshops around the world.  From sewing his own Halloween costume at the age of 10 on his mother’s Sears Kenmore machine, to a part-time job at a fabric store, and through his career as a computer graphic artist, his stunning and intricate art quilts today are a result of David’s journey as he creates quilts that are often mistaken as paintings. His works are adapted from photographs, and his technique evolved from his love of jigsaw puzzles.

In light of the recent hurricanes in Florida and North Carolina, Kate Longo and Shelley Lounsbury would like to collect quilts for survivors of natural disasters.  Depending on how many quilts we receive and how much money is donated for shipping expenses, we will choose one or both of these options:

1. Sending the quilts to Wrap the World with Quilts through Christie’s Quilting Boutique in Norwak, CT;
2. Sending the quilts directly to the Western North Carolina Quilt Guild in Henderson, North Carolina, located near Asheville.

Both organizations need new quilts and blankets of all sizes.  They can be traditionally quilted, tied, made with cotton, fleece or flannel.

Christie’s Quilting Boutique in Norwalk, CT is currently collecting quilts for Wrap the World with Quilts (http://hellocottons.com), a humanitarian organization in Utah that Christie has worked with in the past to deliver quilts to people in the aftermath of natural disasters in the U.S.A. and around the world.  For $20.00, a box weighing up to 50 pounds can be sent via United Parcel Service (UPS) to Wrap the World with Quilts using their pre-paid label.  If we send our quilts through Christie’s Quilting Boutique to Wrap the World with Quilts, the quilts will not be individually registered with QR codes (as described on the organization’s website), and we will not know exactly where our quilts will be distributed, but we know from Christie’s experience that this is a reliable organization to distribute our quilts to people in need, and that the shipping expense will be very reasonable.

Regarding our other option, the president of the Western North Carolina Quilt Guild says she is  delivering quilts to people in Asheville and the surrounding area.  We could ship quilts directly to her, but the shipping expense via UPS may be too high to send all of them there.

Shelley will be collecting quilts and monetary donations for this project at the Comfort Quilts meetings on November 6th and 20th, and at the guild meeting on November 20th.  She will keep a record of all monetary donations and make sure they are used for shipping our quilts.  The quilts will be packed and hopefully shipped before Thanksgiving.
