I’ve been quilting for twenty years, and just learned that if I am piecing two long strips of fabric together, draping them over my shoulder will more smoothly feed my sewing machine! Lecture 9/17/25 – Line as a design Focus
Workshop 9/18/25 – Designing Without Rulers 

Have you ever looked at a quilt and felt arrested, wanting to stop and look at each block? When you create lines without rulers, you add your own unique hand to the look of your blocks. The effect can create a strong visual impact with very simple lines and blocks. In this workshop, you will learn to design your own quilt composition, first using black and white fabrics, and then, if  you wish, moving on to solid color fabrics. You may make one large composition, or a few smaller ones.

This is the workshop for using your big, beautiful prints! In this workshop, we will create a quilt designed around a central block- known as a medallion quilt. We will think about color, scale, and value as we learn a new technique for scrambling fabrics to create our own unique quilts!

• WINNERS CHOICE QUILT DISPLAY & RAFFLE (October 15 meeting)
  Comfort Quilters display the results of this year’s summer quilting project and raffle off one or more of the quilts, you get to choose. Coordinated by Comfort Quilters.
• SATURDAY SIT & SEW (October 18)
  Hang out and sew with fellow guild members.  Bring your sewing machine and project supplies (ironing and cutting stations provided).  The full session costs $5 (9am-5pm, bring your own lunch) with half-day options for $3 (9-1pm or 1-5pm).  Preregistration is required, cash payment will be collected at the door. • BATIK BLOWOUT (November 19 meeting)
  Thanks to a huge donation of batiks to Comfort Quilts, we have a batik bonanza in 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 yd+ cuts at $4 per yard.

• HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE (December 10 meeting)

• SUPER SATURDAY (January  31)
  Excitement is growing for this year’s Super Saturday, which is scheduled for January 31^st, 8:30 – 3:30 with a snow date of February 7^th.  Most classes have been identified, but we are still looking for someone to offer a modern quilting class.  If you are interested in teaching this class, contact Kathy Tuttle.  All classes will be announced at the October meeting where you can signup there or online.  The cost including lunch is $30. Shelley Lounsbury and I welcome you to the new quilting year!  We are new in our Membership role and have enjoyed seeing so many returning and new members.

Please remember to stop at the Membership table at our September meeting to sign in and say hello. New members will be able to collect their name badges. Membership has a table set aside for new members. It is a fun way to meet other new members and learn about Guild activities.

Doors ready to open!

The quilt show is over for another year and what a fabulous show we had!  We had about 1100  visitors to the show who enjoyed our beautiful quilt exhibits, shopped at the vendor booths and learned something new with our guest speaker.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and talents to make this show such a success!  A special thanks to the quilt show committee who made my job so much easier – I appreciate all of your hard work!

This year’s quilt show was truly a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and engaged throughout the weekend. A major highlight was our keynote speaker, Sue Benner, who captivated audiences with her expertise and creative insights and who wowed viewers with the stunning exhibition of her quilts.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure that Sue’s lectures, exhibition, and workshop ran smoothly.  I would like to express my immense gratitude to several key individuals whose contributions made a significant impact:

• Deborah Tashjian and Betty Moulton: Thank you for going the extra miles to take Sue to and from the airport and for facilitating a seamless two-day workshop.
• Gloria Michaelis: You were truly the hostess with the mostest, welcoming Sue into your home with your genuine smile, morning coffee, thoughtfulness, conversations, and all the dinner dates.
• Debby Warren and Anne McDonald: There was an 11th hour need for a banner and you two pulled it off 🙂 You saw a need. You got it done. So appreciated . . .
• Katharine Heller: Your assistance in preparing 18 quilts for hanging was essential!
• Linda Stern and Betty Moulton: Thank you for your help during Sue’s lectures, ensuring everything ran smoothly.
• Gloria Michaelis and Linda Stern: Thanks for packing lunches for Sue (and Paula Nadelstern) during the quilt show.
• Katharine Heller, Claire Benn, Marie Martin, and Betty Moulton: It took an attentive and organized crew to rebox Sue’s quilts for return shipping to Texas. Thank you so much! And for Jane Eyes who lugged these 41.3 pounds of quilts from Purchase to FedEx.
• Katharine Heller for being the “perfect walking partner.”

Sue expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the hospitality she received during her time with us. She shared with me, “Your peeps are my peeps,” which perfectly captures the wonderful connections she formed at the quilt show and throughout the two days of the workshop.

It is this sense of connection and support that makes the NSQG community truly special for all of us. The friendships and camaraderie we share foster an environment where creativity flourishes and everyone feels valued and appreciated.

The raffle baskets team would like to thank everyone who donated items to the TAKE A CHANCE raffle booth at this year’s quilt show.  It was a lot of fun to put together!  We extend a special thanks to Lisa Alfonzetti of Pins and Needles in Mount Kisco for, once again, generously donating a sewing machine to our booth!  Peggy Slater was the lucky winner of the Bernette 08 straight stitch sewing machine.

We had 18 spectacular raffle baskets on display this year.  Some were donated by members of special interest groups in our guild;  others were given to us by individuals.  Our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to them!  It is by virtue of our collective efforts that the booth was able to raise $3,540.00 to help fund programs for our members.

Thanks to all those who contributed quilts and helped man our  amazing Comfort Quilt display and sale booth.  Twenty-three quilts were sold and around $2600 raised to help defray expenses!

At the next Guild meeting, the Guild will be presenting Mt. Tremper Outdoor Ministries with a check for $5,100 to fund scholarships to Camp Herrlich, all thanks to the generous quilting talent, salesmanship and hard cash from the membership!  We can all feel very happy that these proceeds will be providing children who would not otherwise have had the opportunity, fun and enriching camp experiences in the great outdoors this summer.

Congratulations again to the winner of the “Supernova “quilt, Marty Collins!  All of Marty’s children attended Camp Herrlich and she was delighted to have been able to support the Camp and to become the proud owner of the quilt.

We will be “unveiling” the 2026 Raffle Quilt this fall, so watch this space!!

* June Meeting Displays

Eleven of our members have volunteered to display various projects and ideas at the June Salad Supper.  They will be sharing the instructions you will need to make those projects.  Make sure to check out the colorful objects on display.

* Mariandale Quilt Retreat

The fall retreat is scheduled for November 3-5 (Monday-Wednesday) at the Center at Mariandale. It’s already almost completely booked, so if you’re interested, please contact Jody Sullivan (jodysull@optonline.net).

* NSQG 2026 Challenge – Celebrating 250 Years!

On July 4, 2026, our country will be 250 years old.  The challenge this year will honor this wonderful anniversary by using red, white and blue.  The quilts will be collected at the March meeting.  At the April meeting, the quilts will be on display, and ribbons will be awarded.  The quilts will be held until the Guild show in May at which time they will be on display again.  You can find additional info and requirements on the challenge website page.

Joanne and I have been working together on Membership since September 2019. Over the past six years, there has been an increase in membership from 174 members to our current total of 239.  During COVID, we made a concerted effort to stay connected with you and find ways of stabilizing membership at a time when our numbers had started to decline. To this end, we introduced member photos to the Membership Directory and began to send out welcome letters to new members that included detailed, up-to-date information on guild activities. With the return of live meetings, Joanne created new member badges with large, readable names, and we decided to start putting together new member folders, the blue ones that many of you have received at your first meeting. More recently, Joanne and I introduced the Meet and Greet program for new members and re-introduced the New Members Table at guild meetings. Most of all, we have tried to make everyone feel welcome! We are delighted to know that we will be leaving our responsibilities in the very capable hands of Shelley Lounsbury and Jeanne Heinrich, Membership co-chairs for 2025-2026. We wish them well and have no doubt that they will do a fantastic job!

Neighbors Link, with community centers in Mount Kisco, Ossining and Yonkers, provides comprehensive support services that allow immigrant families to build stability and thrive socially and economically.

The Westchester Institute of Human Development is a comprehensive resource for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and vulnerable children, providing direct services, professional education programs, research, technical assistance and information.

At this month’s Guild meeting, Jennifer and Janet will make brief presentations about their sponsored charities and respond to any questions you may have.  These presentations will be followed by an anonymous vote of the members.

Quilt Show Workshop
Sue Benner – Fusing the Grid

Two Day Workshop – May 5 & 6, Millwood Fire House, Millwood, NY
Members – $150, Non-members – $200

Create a series of several art quilts based on the grid. Sue offers many ways to work with rectilinear design using fusible collage as a construction method. This is a great workshop for developing new directions in color, working in a series, and experimenting with silk and other fibers. The techniques and ideas that Sue teaches in this class form the basis for much of her work.

In this workshop you will create 3 abstract art quilts, 16×16” each. Beginning with instructions on making my signature Quilt Canvas, I will teach my method of fused collage, using the structure of a loose grid as a starting point. Building layer by layer, you will construct a field of color and pattern.

I will demonstrate variations on this theme, showing different pathways that you can take each abstraction. The possibilities are endless!  Each quilt can take its own direction and be a unique expression or together they can work as a progression or series.  You can work with traditional cottons, but I encourage adding the   unexpected, including the use of “unruly” fabrics like sheers, lace, silks, and even polyesters.

As for skill, all that is needed for this class is a sense of play and adventure.  A sewing machine is not needed for this class, but if you already have your machine with you, you can add quilting and binding to your creations.

Hello, Quilters!

As you sign up to volunteer at our May quilt show, why not consider putting together a raffle basket for our TAKE A CHANCE raffle booth?  We have room for your special “something”, and  there is still time!  Our booth will display the new Bernette 08 straight stitch sewing machine from Pins and Needles!  Our baskets will include handmade items and lots of fabric, such as a Pantone and Kona “Color of the Year” collection, gorgeous batiks, and international fabrics.  We will have all sorts of quilting notions, and even an AccuQuilt “Go! Me” cutting system with many dies!   We will also have a Keurig Express coffee and milk frother setup, wine from California, a “Bravo!” baking box, fabulous kitchen essentials, beautiful ceramics, a soothing spa collection, a Pre-K skills ensemble and a dog lover’s basket.  It’s all pretty exciting!

Show N Tell – Remember to bring workshop and activity projects to the meeting Show N Tell.  We all love to see everyone’s work.  Don’t forget your Alex Anderson Faces!

Tie Challenge – Quilts will be collected at the March guild meeting.  Remember: 80” total perimeter or circumference; must have a sleeve or other hanging device; put your name on the back. All rules are on the website.  Questions: Debra Oaks  doaks@winterberryquilts.com.

 Ugly Fabric Auction – Bundling will take place on Friday May 16^th in Mount Kisco.  If you want to help bundle the fabrics, contact Liz Titus   bt97mail@gmail.com.  Fabric will be collected through April at Guild meetings or Comfort Quilts.

Mini-Project Display – At the June Salad Supper meeting , show off your favorite mini-project!   We plan to set up a table display along your written instructions for interested members to pick up.  If you have a mini-project to share with others, contact Rona Spar  activities@northernstarquilters.com

A gentle reminder for those of you who have not yet sent in your raffle tickets and checks for this year’s Charity Quilt Raffle (and, of course a big thank you to those of you who have returned your tickets with your checks and generous donations).

This year’s ticket sales for the beautiful Supernova quilt, coordinated by Barbara Allen and quilted by Angela Vertucci, will go to support camp experiences for underprivileged children at Camp Herrlich.

We hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and longer days! With the arrival of our first in-person meeting of the new year, we’d like to remind you to stop by at the Membership table and pick up your name badge.

If you are a new member, please come over and introduce yourself to the membership team. A membership folder will be waiting for you which includes a membership card that can occasionally bring you a discount at a quilt shop.

Two New Member tables, each hosted by a member volunteer, will be set up. If you are a newer member and would enjoy meeting others who are also feeling their way in a new guild, we encourage you to join in and make some new friends!

Speaking of new members, please join us in welcoming our newest members, Patricia Fales of Norwalk, CT and Kacie Grossman of Cold Spring, NY.  Our current membership stands at 228.

It’s time to think about the show volunteer jobs you might like to try. If you value your membership in the guild and enjoy meeting new people, we’d love to have you as a volunteer at the Membership table. There will be a sign-up sheet at the March meeting. Over the last two years, in large part due to your generosity, we were able to present our charities checks for over $5,000.  We would love to be able to do the same for Mt. Tremper Outdoor Ministries this year and help support camp experiences for City children who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

We are now looking for our local charity for 2026!

Hi everyone,

As I write this article, the weather is cold and breezy. What a great time of year to spend the day indoors quilting!

Our guild continues to expand! Our latest membership tally is 224. Please join us in welcoming Katharine Heller of Pound Ridge and Debra Bloomgarden of Mt. Kisco.  With the addition of many new members, Joanne and I encourage you to wear your name badges when you attend guild events. Associating a name with a face can be a great way of getting to know one another.   Name badges for new members will be available for pick up at the Membership table at the March meeting.

It’s not too soon to think about the show volunteer jobs you might like to try. If you value your membership in the guild and enjoy meeting new people, we’d love to have you as a volunteer at the Membership table.
