Timna Tarr will be giving a workshop on March 18th. There are several spots still available so we are opening it up to non guild members, if you have a friend or belong to another guild please spread the word.

Making Maps with Fabric:
Use fabric to capture a special location. Maybe it’s your favorite vacation spot, your neighborhood, or your hometown. Over the course of the workshop, participants learn both pattern-making and improvisational quilting techniques to create personal map quilts. Bring a large paper map of a location you would like to replicate (approx. 24”x36”), your favorite fabrics and threads, and a willingness to experiment. 

The April workshop with Cindy Grisdela is full but contact me if you want to put your name on the waiting list.

May 19th we have Beth Helfter, of EvaPaige Quilt Designs teaching us Accordion Sewn HSTs. This project uses Beth’s Accordion Sewn HST method for making scrappy half square triangles with no waste. Scrappy is the key word. Come join us!

Reminders From the Quilt Show Committee:
  1. Quilt Registration is open on line.  Don’t wait for the last minute.

Comfort Quilters took a short break from quilting to enjoy our yearly Holiday Lunch with a White Elephant Gift Exchange. The annual reappearance of our Christmas mascot ‘Dolly’ (along with a friend) was cheered by all. Thanks to Patricia Loquet for organizing everything each year.

Due to weather and scheduling circumstances, the Member Demos will not occur at the January meeting. However, we are still collecting for our popular Ugly Fabric Auction which will happen at the February meeting. Please go through your stashes and bring in your “ugly” fabric.  ‘One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!’
PLEASE – quilting appropriate, clean, odor free, folded and tagged with amount.

All the blocks were made by students in a class at the New Rochelle Middle School.  The Guild offered to sew them together and Linda Finnegan, Lorraine Mioducki, Rosemary DePaola and Laureen Cannella worked on the sashing, backing and binding to complete the Peace Quilt.

AQS Lancaster Quilt Show

Only 13 people signed up so far.  We need 48 to go on the trip.  January is the final meeting to sign up.  We have gotten a few requests from outside the guild but not nearly enough to fill us up. So at this point the trip is uncertain.

The cost of this year’s trip is $175 per person.  This includes bus ride, hotel (double occupancy) and the meal at Plain and Fancy on Friday evening, as well as entry to the AQS show.
Make checks payable to Northern Star Quilters Guild Ltd.  If you would like to pay by credit card, contact Patricia and we can arrange that payment.

To simplify refunds since the trip may not happen, we are holding on to any checks received til after the January meeting.   If not enough signups, we will return any payments already received.

Holiday Donation of Comfort Quilts to WMC-BHC

It’s that time of year for our Holiday tradition of gifting 45 Quilts to the young patients of Westchester Medical Behavioral Health Center.  It’s our 23rd year.

Patricia Loquet has again made 45 tissue packets of lovely fabrics for the adult patients.
Santa will send his sleigh to NSQG elf Barbara Powers for quilt pick-up along with Bina Meyers, Director of Social Services at the hospital.

NOVEMBER 20 –  Sign up for Charlie Hietala’s workshop on Thread Painting. We will be working on fabric Charlie hand dyes. The thread painting can be done on a featherweight machine or a machine that can drop feed dogs. Charlie will be vending the cover plate for featherweights along with some of her fabrics the night of the lecture.

– Quilt Show Committee Openings – Team up with a friend!
Quilt Handler – Coordinates with the Quilt Display Committee and Quilt Registration for the handling and transport of quilts throughout quilt drop-off, judging, and hanging at the show.  Supervision includes maintaining the correct numerical order of the quilts after registration, packing of quilts and unpacking quilts for judging, and repacking the quilts for transport to the college.
Note-there is already a group of experienced Guild members who are part of this sub-committee.

Buses – Must attend Quilt Show on Saturday to meet buses.  Communicate with guilds in the tri-state area to encourage groups to our show.  A list of guilds and pre-written e-mails are available.  Communication is through e-mail.  Buses get a discount on ticket prices and receive a welcome basket.  We are trying to increase the number of buses to the 2020 Quilt Show.

For those who would like their 2019 Challenge Quilt from last year to be considered for inclusion in NSQG’s entry (8 quilts needed) to the 2020 AQS Grand Rapids ‘Ultimate Guild Challenge’ Display, below are the guidelines from our 2019 Ruby challenge to refresh your memory. 
You must have adhered strictly to our guidelines or your quilt will not meet the AQS guidelines.

NSQG 2019 Challenge Guidelines – Our Quilt Show will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2019!  Tradition states that Ruby is the gift!   So, let’s celebrate our 40th with some beautiful Flowers to display at the Show.

FORMAT:

  • Quilt project must consist of 3 layers, back, top and batting all stitched together and quilted by hand or machine and created by one maker.
  • You must use the Ruby challenge fabric provided to you by the Guild. You will receive a regular 1/4 yard of fabric.
  • You may add as many additional fabric colors as you would like to enhance the Ruby challenge fabric.
  • You may use your choice of threads or embellishments.
  • The quilt can be constructed in any form you wish: paper piecing, traditional pattern, appliqué or your own design.
  • Don’t forget the sleeve for hanging and a label.
  • The quilt size must be 23 inches wide. The length can be up to 30 inches long but, that is the maximum size it can be.

Annual Meeting Snack Schedule –  by Members Last Name

This year Kathy and Nancy are very excited to be the new Hospitality Co-Chairs.  We love that sharing and enjoying snacks are a big part of what brings our guild members even closer together!

As you probably know we would like to invite all those members whose last names begin with the letters A, B, and C to bring in a snack for our September refreshment table.  Cut-up fruit, nuts, cheese, chips and dip, as well as baked goodies are always welcome.

Patricia Loquet will be running our raffle table, and she has been having fun shopping for the prizes.  Don’t forget to bring along some money to buy some chances!

A major change this year is that we will NOT be supplying bottles of water, so if that’s your beverage of choice, plan accordingly.  There will still be tea and coffee available.  Also, if you have your favorite travel mug bring that along as well.

2020 Quilt Show Raffle Quilt

At our September meeting, Pat Julian, our 2020 Raffle Quilt Coordinator will be giving us a first look at this year’s charity quilt, “Sunshine Stars Cabin” to be raffled off at our 2020 Quilt Show.  Designed and coordinated by Pat, the quilt was pieced by NSQG members with donations from individual member stashes and longarm quilted by Angela Vertucci. The quilt is queen/king size (102″ x 102″) and composed of traditional Log Cabin Blocks set on point in a variety of blues, yellows and whites.  Many thanks to Pat, Angela and all the other members that have donated their time and attention for this year’s raffle quilt.  Tickets will be available for members to sell starting at our November guild meeting.

The raffle quilt charity recipient is the New Dawn Family Resource Center of Northern Westchester.  New Dawn FRC provides and expands support for programs and services for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse and human trafficking. The organization accomplishes this by providing a safe place where victims can receive coordinated and accessible free services, including individual counseling, advocacy, legal assistance, peer support and other holistic opportunities to heal.  These services are provided in Northern Westchester, an area where victims of domestic violence have been underserved in the past.

Comfort Quilts winter schedule at the North Salem Ambulance Corps has started.  Comfort Quilts schedule and information is also available on our website.  The projected dates for September thru May are the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays except for switching to the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays in January.
The projected dates are as follows:
2019 – Sep 4 and18, Oct 2 and 16, Nov 6 and 20, and Dec 4 and 18.
2020 – Jan 8 and 22, Feb 5 and 19, Mar 4 and 18, Apr 1 and 15, May 6 and 20.

Joyce Sullivan delivered a wonderful memory speech as part of the NSQG presentation of a friendship quilt to our outgoing president, Susan Fasnacht.  The quilt was made by the membership to express our thanks for the extra year of service and the outstanding work done by Susan for the Guild.  Believe it or not, Susan was surprised. 195 guild members were able to keep it a secret.

Meeting Snack Schedule –  by Members Last Name

The June meeting brings the spectacular Salad Supper.  Our meeting begins at 6 pm!  This dinner provides a wonderful opportunity to socialize with guild friends and bring our formal activities to a close for the summer.  Each member is requested to bring a salad (with a serving utensil) to serve 6–8 people. Please include an ingredients card to display by the dish.  Plates, cutlery, drinks, and dessert will be supplied by Hospitality.

Thru the year over 300 (a new high!) Comfort Quilts have been distributed to give Comfort to those in need, thanks to the hard work of so many of our Guild members.

$4,830.27 has been raised by Comfort Quilts this year for the Guild by means of CQ special kit sales at the quilt show, our ‘Summer Surprise’ quilt raffle in October, sales of donated items at the Holiday Boutique and elsewere, and memorial donations.

Comfort Quilts summer meetings start June 5th at B’nai Yisrael, 2 Banksville Rd, Armonk, with meetings every Wednesday through August between 9:30 and 3:30.  Arrive at your pleasure and stay as long as you like, bring your lunch to eat with us.  Stop by, we will be unveiling our summer surprise project. 2020 Raffle Quilt Charity

There was only one application to sponsor the 2020 Raffle Quilt Charity; therefore no vote is needed.  The Board has approved New Dawn Family Resource Center sponsor by Jodi Sullivan as our Charity.  Its mission is “to provide and expand support for programs and services for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse and human trafficking in the northeast corner of Westchester County.”  While Westchester County is home to many quality support services, they are all located geographically in the southern part, and it is often difficult or impossible for victims to travel to where those services are offered.  Unfortunately there is a need for these services in our community and New Dawn is looking forward to working with NSGQ to support the organization.

For those of you who registered your quilt for our show, remember that Quilt Drop-off is scheduled at KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL for Saturday, April 27 from 1pm – 4pm.
Make sure your quilt is clean, free of odors and lint; has a 4” sleeve attached to the back top of the quilt & that your  registration number is attached to the lower right back corner of the quilt. All registration labels will be sent out to  all participants in the first 2 weeks of April.

Thanks to all who returned their raffle stubs and money to support this year’s charity Dulce Esperanza Camp. If you haven’t turned in your raffle money yet, you can still bring it to the April Guild Meeting. Drawing for the elegant charity quilt and the Bernina Sewing machine will take place at our May Guild meeting.

Quilt Show---

Quilt registration is still open for a few more weeks! 
We need everyone to register their quilts as soon as possible to allow us to get a headstart on planning and layout of the show.
We are looking for a great representation of our guild at our 40th Anniversary Show– so please get busy to finish up those projects and get them registered. 🙂

Remember your quilt does not need to be finished in order to register it; and also, if you plan to register more than one – you need not register them all at the same time. Please register the quilts that are done and ready and you can always add more Quilts later. This helps manage the workload of the Registrar.

2019 Charity Quilt – By popular demand, the Charity Quilt for the 2019 Quilt Show will be on display at the March meeting. Although it was shown at our September meeting, several of the members were unable to attend because of the inclement weather and many closed roads.
Quilt Coordinator – We are currently looking for a Charity Quilt Coordinator to oversee the raffle quilt for the May 2021 Quilt Show. If you or a group of friends are interested in overseeing the construction of this raffle quilt, contact althea nolan for details.

Library Changes:  In an attempt to increase library circulation and meet the time needs of all guild members, The Guild Library will remain open throughout the Guild Meeting.
The library will be staffed from 5:45 to 7. It will again be staffed during the break between meeting and speaker.
When not staffed, please follow these procedures — an honor system. These directions will be posted at the LIBRARY TABLE
1. Return books in designated RETURNS BASKET.
2. Choose up to three books/DVDs.
3. Fill out the WHITE Card in the back of borrowed item with your name and present
date. Leave White Card in WHITE CARD BOX.
4. Take Colored Card indicating the due date–next Guild Meeting.

I no longer have storage room for donations of books, magazines, etc. for the May Quilt Show. Please bring donations directly to the quilt show in May. Thank you.

Charitable Activities---

Thanks to our many generous members who have donated fabric or made quilts, NSQG has distributed 258 comfort quilts as of December 31, 2018. Among those who received some comfort are 14 quilts to Blythedale Hospital, 17 to Putnam/N.Westchester Women’s Resource Center, 24 to Kids in Crisis, 13 to Pleasantville Cottage School, 25 to Ossining Children’s Center, 13 to Maria Ferrari NICU, as well as to many individuals.

All Ruby Challenge entries are due at the February Meeting.

A few submission reminders:
April Russell will be at the back of the cafeteria for the Quilt Challenge Collection!
– Make sure your name is on the back of the quilt.  If the quilt itself has a name, please include that as well.
– Make sure your quilt has a sleeve which is necessary for hanging at the show.
– Bring a wire hanger to be used for the March meeting display.
– Return any unused challenge fabric to be used for ribbons.
– If unable to attend the meeting or use the buddy system to turn in your quilt, please contact April Russell, kadidty@gmail.com.

The Lancaster Trip  has been cancelled for this year!

We made the decision because of the very small number of members who signed up. Let’s hope that next year brings new enthusiasm for this wonderful trip.

SILENT AUCTION
This year for the Silent Auction, we are increasing the maximum perimeter size to 200 inches. This allows for crib quilts and table runners as well as the usual wall quilts. We will be collecting Silent Auction pieces at the Guild meetings.

We are also collecting fat quarters to create ‘Fat Quarter Frenzy’ Raffle Baskets to be included in the Silent Auction. Please bring in any unwanted fat quarters for us to begin to build our Baskets.

NEW CATEGORY: MODERN QUILTS
We will have a new category added to the roster for our show: MODERN QUILTS. We have defined a MODERN QUILT as follows: Modern quilts are inspired by modern design. They include: bold colors, minimalism, asymmetrical design, expansive negative space, alternate grid work, improvisational piecing and/or solid fabrics. Your modern quilt entry need not be quilted by the maker. As always, we will be reviewing the entries carefully to ensure all quilts are in the proper categories. We would love to have a nice offering of modern quilts this year to enhance our show!

QUILT REGISTRATION
Quilt registration opened on January 15th. The fees this year are a bit different: your 1st quilt entered is $15 and $10 each for your 2nd & 3rd quilt entries. The 4th quilt is free to enter; we will evaluate space once all entries are received to see how many 4th quilt entries we will be able to accommodate for the show.

EXHIBITED QUILTS FOR SALE
We are offering an option for your exhibited quilt to be FOR SALE at the Show. When registering your quilt entries online, there is an option if you wish to offer your quilt for sale. This is only an OPTION, of course. You do not need to list your quilt for sale to be in the show. If you do wish to sell your quilt, you will be asked for a SALE price when registering. NSQG will retail a 10% commission on the sale of the quilt, and we will also collect Connecticut sales tax, so bear that in mind when setting your price.
